SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader Friday afternoon against East Stroudsburg on a beautiful day for baseball from Fairchild Field as the team celebrated Military Appreciation Day.
Sophomore
Zack Sims notched his first career complete-game shutout in Game 2, leading Shippensburg (22-19, 11-11 PSAC East) to a 10-0 win over East Stroudsburg (19-20, 8-14). The Warriors took Game 1 by a score of 2-0.
Sims struck out 10 batters in the game, making it the second consecutive start and just the second time in his career that he has fanned double-digit batters. The sophomore continues to have a standout season and currently leads the PSAC in wins (eight) while leading the Raiders in both innings pitched and strikeouts with 67 and 78 respectively. In the PSAC, Sims also ranks second in both innings pitched and strikeouts.
Seniors
Dalton Hoiles and
Grant Hoover each went 3-for-6 on the day. Hoiles tallied two doubles, one RBI and one run scored. The center fielder leads SU and the PSAC in doubles with 18 on the year.
Junior shortstop
Cash Gladfelter also went 3-for-6 at the plate on the day. Gladfelter walked once and tallied a RBI and a run scored on the afternoon. Junior
Drew Bene finished 3-for-7 at the dish in the doubleheader, going 3-for-4 in Game 2 with three RBIs and one run scored.
Shippensburg will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it will travel to East Stroudsburg to finish its four-game series with the Warriors from Mitterling Field.
Game 1
Senior
Gabe Mosser started on the mound for the Raiders and was the hard-luck loser in the game. Mosser fanned nine Warriors and surrendered just six hits in his seven innings of work.
East Stroudsburg got a complete game shutout from Connor Johnson and a two-run home run from Mike Sulcoski that proved to be the difference in the series opener and give the Warriors the 2-0 win.
Game 2
The SU bats woke up in the nightcap to give Sims plenty of run support to secure the doubleheader split. Shippensburg scored two runs in the bottom of first to take an early lead, one on a fielder's choice and the other via a RBI-single from Bene.
Gladfelter added to the Raider lead in the second with a RBI-single through the right side that scored fellow junior
Jack Goertzen.
With a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, SU broke the game open with five runs on six hits to extend its lead to 8-0. SU loaded the bases to start the inning after freshman
Scout Knotts, Goertzen and sophomore
Jacob Pollock all singled.
Gladfelter then drove in Knotts on a sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-0. After East Stroudsburg got the first out, Hoiles doubled down the left-field line to score Goertzen and put runners at second and third with one out and SU up 5-0.
Junior
Tommy Baggett drew a walk to load the bases and Bene followed him with a single through the left side to drive in two and make it 7-0.
SU scored its final run in the inning on a RBI-single from Hoover to make it 8-0 after four innings of play. Shippensburg added two runs in the sixth, one on a RBI-single from junior
Danny Johnson and the other on a sacrifice fly from Pollock.
Goertzen finished the nightcap 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman
Jaret Petty also recorded a hit in a pinch-hit appearance in the sixth.
Sims finished with seven flawless innings, scattering four hits while striking out 10. The sophomore hasn't walked a batter in his last 15 innings of work.
