Baggett’s Walk-off Single Gives Baseball 12-11 Extra-Inning Win Over Shepherd

SU tallies 18 hits in the win; Goertzen reaches base five times

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team got a walk-off single in the 10th inning Tuesday from junior Tommy Baggett to cap off an incredible comeback, as the Raiders rallied from a seven-run deficit to defeat Shepherd, 12-11, on sunny and brisk afternoon at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (12-16) trailed Shepherd (17-12) by seven runs on multiple occasions (deficits of 7-0, 9-2, 11-4) and did not tie the game until it was down to its final out in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Six different Raiders recorded multiple hits in the win. Junior Jack Goertzen reached base five times – he led the way with a 4-for-5 afternoon with a double, one RBI, two runs scored and walk.

Seniors Nick Spangler and Dalton Hoiles each finished with three hits on the day. Spangler went 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Hoiles finished 3-for-6 and tallied his sixth home run of the season, tying his career high.

Senior Grant Hoover, Baggett and junior Cash Gladfelter each recorded two hits in the game. Baggett finished 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and the game-winning hit.

Redshirt-freshman Noah Inch threw 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, surrendering just one earned run while striking out six. Sophomores Kyle Lysy and Jack Jenkens each threw a shutout inning out of relief.

Sophomore Zack Sims tallied his fifth win of the season, pitching two shutout innings out of bullpen while tallying one strikeout.

The Rams scored runs in five of their first six at-bats to take a 11-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, SU would get two runs on back-to-back homers from Spangler and Hoiles to make it 11-6.

After Lysy kept the Rams of the board in the top of the seventh, Baggett added two more runs in the home half of the frame with a no-doubt home run to left-center field to make it 11-8 with two innings to play.

Jenkens entered the game in the eighth for SU throwing a scoreless inning with one strikeout. The Raiders would score two more runs in the home half of the eighth with Gladfelter driving in Spangler with a single and Hoiles scoring on a throwing error after the Rams attempted to throw out Gladfelter, who stole second.

Sims wiggled out a jam in the ninth to keep the Raiders within one run entering their final at-bat. After the first two SU hitters were retired, Hoover and Spangler tallied back-to-back singles to extend the game. Shippensburg then tied the game on consecutive wild pitches from the Rams to send the game to extras tied at 11-11.

After Sims registered a scoreless tenth, SU got back to work at the plate, looking to seal the win. Junior Drew Bene got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Gladfelter then reached on a bunt single to give SU first and second with nobody out.

After the Rams recorded the first out, Goertzen drew a walk to reach base for the fifth time on the day and load the bases for SU to set the stage for Baggett. Baggett delivered the 1-2 offering into right center field to give SU the dramatic 12-11 walk-off win.

Shippensburg will return to action Friday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Lock Haven for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division (PSAC) doubleheader from Fairchild Field.
