SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team swept Lock Haven on Friday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on a sunny and windy day from Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (14-16, 4-9 PSAC) rallied late in both games to sweep Lock Haven (16-9, 8-6). The Raiders took Game 1, 8-4, and Game 2, 4-2.
Junior
Cash Gladfelter had a standout day for the Raiders. The shortstop finished the day 5-for-7 with a home run, triple, two doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. The junior also finished perfect in the field on 16 defensive chances and contributed to a pair of double plays.
Junior
Jack Goertzen went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs. Goertzen also walked in Game 1 and has now reached base in nine of his last 13 plate appearances spanning three games.
Freshman
Scout Knotts finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs. Seniors
Nick Spangler and
Dalton Hoiles and junior
Drew Bene all recorded two hits on the day for SU.
Senior
Gabe Mosser picked up his fifth win of the year in Game 1. Mosser notched his fourth consecutive complete game and struck out six Bald Eagles on the day.
Senior
Andy Crum notched his second win of the year in Game 2. The lefty surrendered just five hits on the day while striking out one.
Junior closer
Michael Hope relieved Crum in the sixth inning of Game 2, finishing the final 1.2 innings unscathed en route to his fourth save of the year. Hope did not surrender a hit in his appearance.
Shippensburg will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it travels to Lock Haven for the final two game of the series.
Game 1
Lock Haven jumped out to an early lead after tallying five hits in the first to score three runs. SU got on the board in the bottom of the second after Gladfelter doubled to left-center field to score Bene.
After Lock Haven added a run on a wild pitch in the third, the Raiders pulled within one run in the fourth after Knotts doubled down the left-field line to score Gladfelter and Goertzen.
Gladfelter continued to swing a hot bat in the fifth, tripling off the top of the wall in right field to drive in two and give the Raiders a 5-4 lead.
SU added insurance runs, with the first coming in the fifth on a RBI-single from junior
Tommy Baggett, and the second coming in the sixth on a two-run-single from Goertzen.
Mosser quieted the Lock Haven bats after receiving the lead to close out the 8-4 victory.
Game 2
The Raiders got on the board first in the nightcap on a home run from Gladfelter down the right field line. It was the junior's first home run this season.
After Lock Haven tied the game in the third, SU regained the lead in the fourth on Knotts' second double of the day that found the left-field corner and scored Baggett.
Lock Haven tied the game in the fifth but the Raiders would respond in their ensuing at-bats. SU scored on a Lock Haven throwing error to take a 3-2 lead and would add one more on a RBI-single by Gladfelter to take a 4-2 lead into the sixth.
Crum retired the leadoff batter in the sixth, but was then relieved by Hope. The junior closer recorded the final two outs in the sixth and pitched a clean top of the seventh to secure the 4-2 win for Shippensburg.
