SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team got a walk-off single in Game 1 from junior
Cash Gladfelter and a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning of Game 2 from junior
Tommy Baggett to sweep Le Moyne, 4-3 and 12-11, in a Sunday afternoon non-conference matchup from Fairchild Field.
Â
Shippensburg (4-7) split the series with Le Moyne (8-4) with three of the four games decided by one run. Both SU and Le Moyne pounded out 21 hits on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Baggett finished Sunday 5-for-7 with a double, the game-winning home run in Game 2 and four RBIs. The junior scored four times on the day and reached base six out of eight times. Baggett went 4-for-5 in Game 2.
Â
Senior
Nick Spangler finished 5-for-8 on the day including a 4-for-4 effort in Game 2. The senior was just a triple shy of the cycle in the nightcap and homered to left field to lead off the game for the Raiders. Spangler finished the day with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Â
Senior
Dalton Hoiles added two more hits on the day, including a no-doubt home run off the batter's eye in Game 2, to finish the weekend 5-for-12 with two homers and three RBIs.
Â
Game 1
Â
Sophomore
Zack Sims continued his stellar 2018 season with a complete-game effort in which he surrendered just two hits while striking out seven. Sims leads the Raider pitching staff with 21 strikeouts on the year and has struck out at least six hitters in each of his first three starts.
Â
SU took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the second on a RBI-double off the bat of junior
Jack Goertzen that scored Baggett and freshman
Scout Knotts.
Â
Le Moyne would eventually take the lead in the fifth on a three-run home run from Andrew Taft and would hold that lead until the bottom of the seventh.
Â
The Raiders used their last at-bats to stage the comeback win. After Le Moyne was able to record the first out in the bottom of the seventh, Baggett walked to give SU a base runner. Goertzen then grounded into a fielder's choice but an error by the Dolphin second basemen allowed Baggett to reach second safely and give SU first and second with one out.
Â
Junior
Ty Painter entered the game as a pinch hitter and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Spangler then drove in a run on a fielder's choice to tie the game and leave runners at the corners for Gladfelter.
Â
Gladfelter wasted little time in ending the game, lining the first pitch offering to left center to give the Raiders the walk-off win. The junior shortstop finished the game 2-for-4 and was the only Raider to record a multi-hit game.
Â
Game 2
Â
The nightcap saw both teams combine for 23 runs on 34 hits including seven home runs.
Â
After Le Moyne took an early 1-0 lead, Spangler tied the game with a leadoff home run to left field in the bottom of the first. The Dolphins answered with a five-run second to take a 6-1 lead. SU answered with two runs in the second on an RBI-single from Goertzen and an RBI-double from Spangler.
Â
Le Moyne built a 9-3 advantage through four and a half innings of play but the Raiders would not go away. SU scored six runs combined in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to tie the game at nine. The sixth inning included Raider hits from Spangler, Knotts, Baggett and junior
Drew Bene.
Â
Le Moyne scored two runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead on back-to-back home runs from Taft and Nick Place. SU would again respond though with a three-run eighth to eventually secure the win.
Â
Hoiles started the bottom of the eighth off with a home run off the batter's eye to cut the Dolphin lead in half. After Le Moyne recoded the first out, Bene walked, setting the stage for Baggett. Baggett took the 0-1 offering to dead center field for his second home run of the season, giving SU a 12-11 lead.
Â
Junior closer
Michael Hope entered the ninth after throwing 60-plus pitches the previous day to record his third save of the season. Freshman
Dalton Oates threw two scoreless frames out of relief for SU while striking out one. Oates has not allowed an earned run through 4.2 innings (four appearances) this season.
Â
Shippensburg will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it goes on the road to take on Jefferson in a single nine-inning game in Philadelphia.
