SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Jefferson on Saturday afternoon – winning Game 1, 20-0, and taking Game 2, 16-2, on a brisk and sunny day from Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (6-7) pounded out 38 hits on the day while scoring 36 runs between both games. SU held Jefferson (3-9) to just 10 hits and two runs on the day.
Ten different Raiders had a multi-hit afternoon, with six of those 10 recording at least three hits. Junior
Drew Bene finished the day 7-for-8 with a home run, a double and four RBIs to lead SU offensively.
Senior
Grant Hoover tallied six hits in seven at-bats, totaling two doubles and three RBIs. Junior
Cash Gladfelter went 5-for-8 on the day with two triples, a double and five RBIs.
Seniors
Dalton Hoiles and
Nick Spangler each tallied four hits in the doubleheader, with Hoiles hitting two no-doubt home runs in Game 2 and Spangler going 3-for-5 in Game 1.
Sophomore
Zack Sims continued his dominance on the mound in Game 1, throwing six shutout innings while surrendering just one hit. Sims also struck out six Rams, giving him at least six strikeouts in all of his starts this season.
Junior
Jack Goertzen finished the day 3-for-8 with two doubles while freshman
Jaret Petty went 2-for-2 with two doubles and four RBIs, notching his first career hits as a Raider.
Shippensburg will return to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. when it takes on Wilmington in a single nine-inning game at Fairchild Field.
Game 1
Sims set the tone for the Raiders on the mound, allowing the offense to settle in and finally break out to secure the 20-0 win. Sims gave up a hit to the second batter of the game and was flawless the rest of the way. The sophomore finished with six strikeouts giving him a team high 27 on the year.
Junior
Tommy Baggett, Spangler, Hoover and Gladfelter all finished the game with at least two hits, with Gladfelter totaling with four and Spangler tallying three.
SU scored 15 runs on 11 hits in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open. Three Raiders recorded multiple hits in the inning.
Freshman
Chris Horst pitched one scoreless inning out relief in the win while fellow freshman
Chase Zurawski notched his first career hit with a RBI-double in the sixth.
Game 2
The Raiders picked up right where they left off in Game 1, scoring runs in each of the first six innings to ultimately secure the sweep and the 16-2 victory in Game 2.
Hoiles went 4-for-5 in the game, hitting two home runs to left field to give the junior a team high four on the year. The center fielder drove in six runs in the game.
Senior
Gabe Mosser got the start and win on the mound for SU. Mosser pitched five innings, giving up one run while striking out eight. Senior
Andy Crum pitched three innings out of relief while junior
Michael Hope closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
Hoover had a perfect day at the plate in Game 2, going 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Hoover reached in all five plate appearances in the nightcap.
