SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Gabe Mosser threw the tenth no-hitter (eighth solo) in school history on Saturday – the first by a Raider in nine years – to cap a doubleheader sweep for the Shippensburg University baseball team on a bitterly cold and windy day at Fairchild Field.
SU defeated Pitt-Johnstown in Game 1, 18-6, before Mosser's no-hitter highlighted a 4-0 Game 2 victory.
Shippensburg (9-7) used stellar starting pitching from Mosser and sophomore
Zack Sims to sweep Pitt-Johnstown (3-10) in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover matchup.
Mosser's no-hitter was the highlight of the day for SU and is the first by a Raider pitcher since Tim Freshour in 2009. The only blemish on the day for the senior was a two-out walk in the sixth inning. Mosser struck out 10 – including the final four batters of the game.
It is the fourth time in Mosser's career he has recorded double-digit strikeouts in a game. He improved to 3-2 with the victory.
Sims picked up the win in Game 1 for SU throwing five strong innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out five. He is now 4-1 on the year and has won three consecutive starts.
Senior
Grant Hoover led the Raiders offensively with four hits on the day. The senior outfielder scored two runs while driving in three.
Junior catchers
Drew Bene and
Jack Goertzen both finished the day 2-for-4. Both backstops scored twice with Bene driving in three runs and Goertzen knocking in one.
Junior
Cash Gladfelter finished the twinbill 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Gladfelter's second RBI on the day broke a 0-0 tie in the sixth inning of Game 2 and proved to be the game-winning run.
Shippensburg will return to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. when it will go on the road to take on Shepherd in a single nine-inning game.
Game 1
After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, The Raiders responded with 18 runs over the next four innings to defeat the Mountain Cats. Sims led the way on the mound and secured his fourth victory on the year.
Senior
Nick Spangler finished the game 1-for-1 with a single and a RBI that came on a sacrifice fly before he was replaced by junior
Ty Painter in the fourth inning.
Hoover finished 3-for-6 in the game with three RBIs. The two-way player for SU also pitched out of the bullpen to make his first appearance on the mound this season. Bene was the only other Raider to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Game 2
The nightcap saw the Raiders score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to push their winning streak to seven games.
Mosser's performance was an all-time effort for SU and capped off a two-win day for SU. The senior was dominant all-day long, throwing 97 pitches en route to his third win of the year.
The Raiders finished with five hits in Game 2, none more important than Gladfelter's single through the right side that broke a 0-0 tie in the sixth. SU scored two more runs on an error and Goertzen delivered an RBI single.
