SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University senior
Caleb Bartlett was named to the 2016-17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Spring Top 10 squad on Tuesday afternoon after voting results were announced by the league office.
Â
Bartlett, a criminal justice major and coaching minor, graduated summa cum laude on May 13, receiving his bachelor of science with a final cumulative grade-point average of 3.809.
Â
Tuesday's award marks the second consecutive season in which Bartlett has received a PSAC Top 10, accompanying his honor this winter. Shippensburg maintains the lead among conference institutions with 61 all-time PSAC Top 10 recipients – the league honor was first awarded in the fall of 1997.
Â
Bartlett emerged from a talented group of nominees; he was awarded alongside IUP runner Austin Cooper, Clarion baseball player Tyler Falk, Slippery Rock thrower David Reinhardt and East Stroudsburg runner Alex Zubko. The average combined cumulative GPA of the five men's award winners is 3.92.
Â
In his final collegiate meet, Bartlett finished sixth in the hammer throw at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to earn All-America First Team honors. His throw of 204 feet, 2 inches stands as his collegiate best, improving his own school record, and makes him the first All-American hammer thrower in school history.
Â
His 2017 outdoor season included three place-winning performances at the PSAC Championships, finishing second in the hammer (195-08), sixth in the shot (47-03) and sixth in the discus (149-03). He earned a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region designation for his regular-season best in the hammer (198-10, achieved at Bucknell).
Â
Bartlett's extraordinary career includes two All-America performances in the hammer throw, as his 10th-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships resulted in a Second Team classification. He is a 10-time PSAC place-winner spanning the indoor and outdoor seasons who served in 2016-17 as the SU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Vice President, playing an integral role in community service and community engagement activities organized by the Raider student-athletes.
In May, Bartlett was named to the Academic All-Districtâ„¢ 2 NCAA Division II Track & Field Team as nominated and voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bartlett is among those in the consideration for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced Thursday.
Â
To be a candidate for the PSAC Top 10 Awards, a student-athlete must achieve a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. A total of five men and five women are selected as award winners after each of the three competitive seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring).
