SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Graduate Derek Nothstein was named the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year on Friday afternoon, becoming the third Raider to receive the honor since it was first awarded in 2006.
 
Nothstein completed his collegiate career last month with his third All-America First Team trophy in the javelin, placing fourth at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
 
In his highest-career finish of his four trips to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Nothstein posted a collegiate personal best of 220 feet, 9 inches (67.28 meters) on his fifth throw of the competition. It was his second PR of the meet, as he had previously set a new best of 217 feet, 8 inches (66.34 meters) on his first throw.
 
Nothstein (6th in 2013, 6th in 2016, 4th in 2017) is one of three Raiders in school history with three All-America performances, joining John Pacovsky (5th in 2003, 8th in 2004, 3rd in 2005) and Jason McMullen (4th in 1995, 7th in 1996, 3rd in 1997). Shippensburg's "Javelin U" tradition has now achieved 29 All-America throws since 1977, and had at least one All-American in 14 of the last 17 years.
 
At the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Championships, Nothstein won his third conference championship with a throw of 212 feet, 4 inches. Nothstein graduates as a three-time NCAA All-American and a three-time PSAC Champion, achieving four All-PSAC (Top 3) finishes in his career (1st in 2012, 2nd in 2013, 1st in 2016, 1st in 2017).
 
Nothstein joins LeQuan Chapman (2015) and Nate Reider (2007) as PSAC Men's Outdoor Field Athletes of the Year. Prior to 2006, the PSAC awarded one Athlete of the Year award for the entire league.
