The Shippensburg tennis team began the spring portion of its season with a bang Saturday with a 7-2 win over Shenendoah at Winchester Country Club in Winchester, Va.
The Raiders (1-4) picked up their first victory of the season behind strong play at doubles and four wins in the singles department. Each doubles match was close Saturday as sophomore
Gabbie Binder and freshman
Catherine Miller combined to win No. 1 doubles, 8-4.
Senior
Emilie Luttman and sophomore
Kaylin Gallagher won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles while freshman
Daisy Rundio and sophomore
Hannah Coath had the toughest test of all, winning 8-6.
SU carried that momentum over into singles where Luttman secured a win at No. 3 singles. The senior dropped her first set, 6-3, but bounced back to win the next two, 6-2 and 6-1. Meanwhile, the trio of Gallagher, Rundio and Coath combined to lose just four games as all three won in straight sets.
The win over the Hornets is the first for SU in six meetings as the two teams first meeting back in 2010 was cancelled due to weather. Since then, the Raiders had not beaten Shenandoah until Saturday night. The match went until after 11 p.m., but the wait was worth it for SU head coach,
Emily Maerz, who earned her first victory at the helm of the Raiders.
SU is back in action on March 10, when it travels to Wilmington, Del. to take on Goldey-Beacom.
