SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team won the final event on Saturday, the 200-yard freestyle relay, to ultimately prevail in a Senior Day home dual meet over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) compatriot Edinboro, 134-126, in competition from Donald N. Miller Pool.
Shippensburg honored its five seniors beforehand and then dueled all day long with Edinboro, a squad who competed at home Friday night and whose arrival on Saturday was delayed due to transportation issues. The Fighting Scots still managed to win six individual events and the opening relay, equaling the Raiders with the identical amount of event victories.
Senior
Shaun Smith and freshman
Jeff Beyer proved integral for the Raiders. Smith put forth outstanding races in both butterfly events, swimming hard to win both (53.47 in the 100 fly and 2:01.81 in the 200 fly), while also anchoring the victorious 200 free relay that concluded the meet.
Smith was recognized before the meet along with fellow seniors
Tyler Clisham,
Alex Gallagher,
Mike Gyurisin and
Chandler Johnson.
Beyer won all three freestyle events he swam by at least 6.5 seconds: the 200 (1:46.41), 500 (4:56.92) and the 1,000 (10:26.25), while also opening the final 200 free relay. He contributed 30 individual points toward the team score and assisted with another 10 in the last event.
Junior
Quinton Beck put forth some excellent swims, including an especially important second-place time of 5:10.70 in the 500-yard freestyle that edged Edinboro's Ryne Fromholzer by just .17 seconds. Beck also took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle to Beyer, posting a time of 10:33.34.
Freshman
Nick Bloom had a courageous effort in the 200-yard individual medley (IM), swimming 2:02.85 to finish just .01 seconds behind the Edinboro victor Gage Halle. Bloom took second place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.60) and swam the opening leg of the second-place 200-yard medley relay that placed in 1:39.53.
Junior
Kristian Voulopos won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.30 and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 54.58 seconds. Clisham was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.53), while sophomore
Evan Smith was second in the 100-yard freestyle on a time of 50.65 seconds.
SU's 200 freestyle relay that clinched the meet victory swam 1:28.88 and featured Beyer, Voulopos,
Evan Smith and
Shaun Smith 1:28.88. The meet-opening 200 medley relay featured Bloom, Clisham, sophomore
Shane Kaliszewski and
Shaun Smith swimming 1:46.73.
Shippensburg will travel to Bucknell in two weeks (Sat., Jan. 28) for its final competition of the regular season. The PSAC Championships are just one month away.
