SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Ryan McMillen tied a single-game school record with six hits on Tuesday, as the Shippensburg University baseball team cranked out 23 hits in a lopsided 19-6 victory over Wilmington (Del.) in a non-conference contest at a sunny Fairchild Field.
Â
Shippensburg (16-21) scored runs in each of the first three innings to build a 9-5 lead. SU sent 11 men to the plate in the sixth, scoring seven times, and added three more runs in the seventh. The Raiders did not have a 1-2-3 inning at the plate all day, recording at least one hit in each frame.
Â
McMillen became the second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) player to record a six-hit game this season, joining East Stroudsburg's Christian Rishel, and the ninth Division II player to do so in 2016. He finished within a double of the cycle, totaling six RBIs, a steal and three runs scored.
Â
Senior
Mike Marcinko was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and a double among his hits. Â Sophomore
Nick Spangler doubled twice in the sixth inning alone and finished the day 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs.
Â
Ten different Raiders had at least one hit. Sophomore
Grant Hoover was 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, a walk, and two runs scored. Hoover began the day as the designated hitter before coming on to pitch in the eighth, recording two strikeouts. Sophomore
Tyler Betz started at first base and finished with a double, an RBI-single, and two runs scored.
Â
Sophomore
Dalton Hoiles had two hits, including a double, with two RBIs. Freshman catcher
Jack Goertzen came off the bench and delivered a two-run double before getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give him a third RBI. Goertzen relieved junior
Jake Kennedy, who was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
Freshman
Zack Zoller started in right field and obtained his first collegiate hit – singling in the third inning. Sophomore
Levi Varner had a pinch-hit RBI-single in the seventh.
Â
McMillen's six hits began when he blooped a two-out, two-run single in the first. He then tripled home Spangler in the third with a rocket into the right-center field gap. In the fourth, McMillen singled and then stole second. The sixth inning began with a Spangler double and a walk by senior
Austin Allison that preceded McMillen's three-run homer.
Â
A pair of infield hits rounded out McMillen's day at the plate. He reached to lead off the seventh after a bad hop ate up the third baseman. McMillen led off the eighth by beating out a single that hugged the base line deep at third base.
Â
McMillen is the fourth player in school history to achieve a six-hit game, joining Steve McCardell (Mar. 6, 2009 vs. Northwood), Jay Kipp (Mar. 8, 1992 vs. Sacred Heart) and Jeff Taylor (Apr. 21, 1982 vs. Juniata).
Â
Senior
Thomas Swartz was the pitching stalwart of the day. He entered in the third inning, relieving senior
Seth LeFever, and allowed just two hits over four scoreless innings of work. Swartz walked two and struck out three.
Â
The outing was the longest of Swartz's career. It was his 43rd collegiate appearance. He entered Tuesday having thrown just five innings this season over eight appearances. Â
Â
Freshman
Cash Gladfelter pitched the seventh, striking out one and allowing a run in his second collegiate outing on the mound. Fellow freshman
Michael Hope worked a scoreless ninth and struck out the final batter to end the game.
Â
SU's 23 hits are its most in a single game since the Raiders had 29 back on Mar. 7, 2008 against Northwood. Â
Â
Shippensburg travels to Kutztown at 1 p.m. Friday for a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader. SU's Saturday doubleheader against the Golden Bears will be Baseball Alumni Day at Fairchild Field.
