The Shippensburg University tennis team had a solid competition at Kutztown on Tuesday in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division opener, winning a pair of doubles matches, but ultimately falling 7-2 to the Golden Bears at Keystone Courts.
 
Shippensburg (1-6, 0-1 PSAC East) led 2-1 entering singles, as senior Brittnee Buckley and junior Emilie Luttman posted an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles while the freshmen tandem of Kaylin Gallagher and Hannah Coath achieved an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
 
Senior Emily Cox and freshman Gabbie Binder, meanwhile, won four games in their match at No. 2 doubles.
 
The closest singles match came at No. 4 singles, where freshman McKensi Washabaugh won seven games but dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Coath played to scores of 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, while freshman Bryanna Beamer worked to a 6-3, 6-3 score at No. 6 singles.
 
Shippensburg continues its busy week tomorrow with a 4 p.m. home match against Bloomsburg. The Raiders also travel to Shepherd on Friday and host Cheyney on Saturday.
