The Shippensburg University men's swimming team continued its early-season schedule on Tuesday night with a dual meet at IUP, coming up short on the overall score but displaying noticeable improvement in a number of events.
"We're competing well," head coach
Tim Verge said of his squad. "We're at a good place and saw lots of improvement. Several swimmers didn't have much time in between events, we asked a lot of them, and they responded well."
Among the notable examples of tough doubles involved distance events. Freshman
Jeff Beyer won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:09.34 and then came right back to win the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.87 – both times that met the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.
Freshman
Christian Gamboa finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Later on, Gamboa won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:56.13, and then got back in the pool for the 100-yard breaststroke in which he finished third in 1:02.72. Beyer swam 4:56.99 in the 500 freestyle, less than a second behind Gamboa.
"
Jeff Beyer pulled some really tough doubles tonight and really swam well," Verge said. "
Christian Gamboa had a nice race in the 500 freestyle, and
Kristian Voulopos was solid in the 100-yard freestyle."
Junior
Kristian Voulopos impressed in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.16 and took second in the 50-yard freestyle on a time of 22.31 seconds. Freshman
Adam Fox was second to Voulopos in the 100-yard freestyle with a PSAC cut of 49.56 seconds.
The meet had a strong end for the Raiders, as Fox, Voulopos, freshman
Thomas Toscano and senior
Shaun Smith teamed up for a victorious 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:29.40 – enough for a win by .03 seconds.
"
Shaun Smith had a phenomenal relay leg at the end," Verge said. "That helped us win it. He raced really hard."
Shippensburg's next dual meet is on the Friday before Homecoming, hosting California (Pa.) and Fairmont State at 5 p.m. on October 28 from Donald N. Miller Poll.
