Baseball Sweeps PSAC Crossover Doubleheader With UPJ, Kyle McClintock Pitches Shutout in Game 1

Ryan Hill hits combined 3-for-5 with three runs, one walk, one RBI

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team used standout performances from junior pitcher Kyle McClintock and sophomore catcher Ryan Hill Tuesday to sweep a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover doubleheader with Pitt-Johnstown, emerging victorious in the opener, 5-0, before taking the nightcap, 8-3 from Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (16-16) was held scoreless by Pitt-Johnstown (4-28) through the first four innings of Game 1 before junior Austin Allison smoked an RBI-triple down the left field line to score Hill.

Still in the fifth inning, senior Cody Ezolt hit a two-out, two-run single through the left side to put the Raiders up 3-0.

SU would add two runs in the sixth including one on a double steal in which freshman Grant Hoover stole home after freshman Nick Spangler took off for second base.

McClintock pitched SU's first solo shutout of the season and allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out six to earn his second win of the season and the first complete game of his career.

In Game 2, the Raiders opened the scoring in the third inning when junior Mike Marcinko singled home sophomore Ryan McMillen.

The Mountain Cats tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Shippensburg scored four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to counter a two-run sixth by Pitt-Johnstown, keeping the visitors at arm's length.

Hill finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs, one walk, one RBI and one stolen base. Entering the day, he was hitless in 13 at-bats this season.

Marcinko hit 4-for-7 with two doubles, two RBIs, two stolen bases and one run while Spangler finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base, two RBIs and a run.

In the nightcap, junior Seth LeFever earned the start and allowed one run on four hits and struck out two in four innings of work. Senior Nick Massetti picked up the win after pitching a scoreless inning in relief. Sophomore Josh Kutchey got the final five outs to achieve his second save in as many days.

Shippensburg travels to Millersville Friday to take on the Marauders at 1 p.m. in a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader from Cooper Park.
