Volleyball Impresses in Win at West Chester, 3-1

SU exacts revenge for straight-set loss earlier this season

The Shippensburg University volleyball team ran its winning streak to four matches Saturday with a 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19) road win over West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match at Hollinger Field House.

Shippensburg (25-8, 14-6 PSAC), which has won 10 of its last 11 matches dating back to Oct. 17, clinched the No. 2 seed in the PSAC East and will host a home playoff match on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The two teams ended up splitting the season series, each winning on the other's home court.

Junior Annie Goerl once again led the charge for Shippensburg with a double-double of a team-high 14 kills to go along with 14 digs. In her two matches this week, Goerl had a double-double in each, totaling 29 kills, 25 digs and hitting .299.

Freshman Morgan DeFloria had an effective day, swinging .289 with 13 kills. Senior Taylor Gottshall converted 10 of her 19 total attacks into kills to go along with two block assists.

Shippensburg had six different players record a block assist, led by junior Rebecca Pryor who finished with four. Junior setter Maura Nolan led SU with both 39 assists and 19 digs.

The Raiders, which hit .203 as a team, trailed 21-19 in the first set after five straight West Chester points. However, SU responded by taking six of the last eight points to win the set.

The Golden Rams evened the match 1-1 after hitting an impressive .520 in the second set, but the Raiders again responded well. SU won the first five points of the third set and never trailed in taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set SU took control with a 6-0 run to take a 22-16 lead and eventually a 25-19 win to take the match.

Shippensburg will be on the road again next weekend, starting with a match Friday night at Kutztown at 7 p.m.
