Volleyball Uses Lengthy Runs, Goerl's Attacks to Sweep Millersville, 3-0

SU hits .261 in its 23rd victory of the season

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team started fast Tuesday and sustained its momentum in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-19) sweep of Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match inside Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (23-8, 12-6 PSAC) stormed out to a 12-3 advantage in the first set on its way to a 14-point win. In the second set, the run was delayed a bit, but SU won 10-of-11 points, including eight-in-a-row to turn a 9-6 lead into a 19-7 advantage.

SU trailed Millersville (14-14, 5-13 PSAC) as late as 15-14 in the third set, but took control by winning six of seven points. The Raiders hit .261 as a team in the victory.

Junior Annie Goerl's fantastic night led the Raider charge. The lefty recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs. Goerl hit an impressive .500, converting 15 kills on 30 total attacks with no errors. The 15 kills are a season-high for Goerl and the most in her career in a three-set match.

Senior middle blockers Faith Athey and Taylor Gottshall combined for 14 kills and six blocks on the night.

Four different players had double-digit digs, including Goerl, senior Laura Plank with 18, sophomore Maria Peluso with 15 and sophomore Courtney Malott, who had 11.

Junior setter Maura Nolan finished with a match-high 30 assists.

Shippensburg will play its final four matches of the regular season on the road, beginning Friday at Cheyney with a 7 p.m. start.
