SU gets nine kills and four blocks from Athey; DeFloria provides nine kills

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team dropped a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup to West Chester on Friday night in straight sets from Heiges Field House. The Golden Rams took the match 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19.

Shippensburg (13-6, 4-4 PSAC) and West Chester (16-4, 4-4) finished with the exact same amount of attacks and blocks on the night and were within one error of each other, but the visiting Golden Rams swung .213 with 44 kills while the Raiders had a .110 hitting efficiency on just 32 kills.

Senior Faith Athey tied for the team lead with nine kills and hit an efficient .231 from the floor. Athey had just three errors on 26 attempts and also had a team-high four block assists.

Freshman Morgan DeFloria also had nine kills, registering a team-high 38 swings. DeFloria hit .105 and had eight digs. Senior libero Laura Plank led the Raiders with 11 digs, while sophomore Maria Peluso had nine.

Senior Taylor Gottshall had two solo blocks and a block assist, bringing her career total to 534. Gottshall moved into sixth on the all-time PSAC blocks list. She sits fourth in PSAC history for block assists with 421 in her career – she is 50 block assists shy of the all-time conference record in the category.

Junior Maura Nolan had 26 assists, five digs, two aces and two kills.

Junior Rebecca Pryor earned a start Friday night and had five kills without an error, hitting .500 on 10 attempts. Pryor also had two block assists. She has 10 kills on 25 attempts through the first two matches of the week and is swinging .320 over that span.

West Chester was paced offensively by transfer Molly Grammer, who had a game-high 17 kills. She had a whopping 52 attempts – 30 more than any other player on her team – and hit .192. The Golden Rams won in Heiges Field House for the first time since 2008, as the visitors snapped a seven-match road losing streak to the Raiders that included five straight sweeps.
