SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team celebrated Dig Pink and Senior Day in style Saturday by beating Kutztown 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-12) and Chowan 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-13) as part of a tri-match at Heiges Field House.
The Raiders (20-7, 10-5 PSAC) lost their first set of the day to Kutztown, but rebounded in a big way to win the next six sets played. The Raiders hit .186 on the day, combining for 100 kills in the two matches.
The group of three seniors,
Faith Athey,
Laura Plank and
Taylor Gottshall, were honored before the Chowan match.
Gottshall had an especially memorable senior day recording 20 kills to reach 1,000 career kills. Her accomplishment was greeted with a loud roar from her teammates and the crowd during the match against Chowan. She becomes just the seventh player in school history to accomplish the feat. Gottshall also had seven blocks in the two matches, including six in the Kutztown win.
Athey led SU with 11 kills in the win over Chowan and recorded 19 total kills on the day to go along with six blocks. Plank led Shippensburg with 29 digs in the two matches.
Among the other standouts was freshman
Morgan DeFloria, who led Shippensburg with 23 kills, including 18 against Kutztown. Junior
Annie Goerl posted a double-double for the second straight day, recording 13 kills and 15 digs in the win over the Golden Bears.
Junior
Maura Nolan combined for 74 assists in the two victories.
The Raiders also started slow against Chowan, falling behind 22-19 after six straight points by the Hawks. However, SU responded by winning six of the last seven points to win the first game before winning the final two sets handily.
Dig Pink Day at Heiges Field House raised money for the Side-Out Foundation.
