Volleyball Uses Team Effort to Sweep Virginia Union, 3-0

SU notches sixth consecutive victory

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team used a balanced effort from virtually its entire roster Wednesday night to sweep Virginia Union, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20), in a non-conference match inside Heiges Field House.
 
Shippensburg (21-7) had 14 different players contribute points in its sixth consecutive victory. The Raiders have won eight of nine matches dating back to Oct. 6.
 
SU hit a solid .222 in a 12-point first set victory and .121 overall for the night. SU combined for 33 kills as a team. The Raiders also had 10 service aces and 10 total team blocks.

Sophomore Shelby Henry had a fine night for the Raiders, leading all players with 10 kills on a team-high 27 total attacks. Henry also added five digs and two blocks to the SU effort. Henry's kill total, hitting percentage (.259) and block total were all new career highs.
 
Sophomore Catherine Amoriello had a balanced night as well, dishing out a team-high 23 assists and serving an SU-best four aces. The four aces are a new career best for the setter.
 
Freshman Bridget Terrel added to the service ace total with two of her own – a new career best.
 
Sophomore Brittany Whitacre led SU with eight digs while also contributing six kills, the second-most by an SU player to Henry.
 
Freshman Keara O'Brien-Pol and junior Annie Goerl each added four kills for Shippensburg.
 
Freshman Jenna Hevner set a new career high with five blocks, including two solo stuffs. Freshman Katie Lemheney also set a new career-best in blocks with two.
 
Shippensburg is back in action Friday at home in a pivotal match against PSAC East leader, Pitt-Johnstown, beginning at 7 p.m.
