The No. 17-ranked Shippensburg University baseball team scored three runs with two outs in the third inning of Game 2 to win 3-1 in seven innings and salvage a doubleheader split at California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon after dropping a 3-2 decision in nine innings in Game 1 from Cal's CONSOL Energy Park.

The Raiders (4-2) limited the Vulcans to just four runs (three earned) in 16 innings on the day thanks in large part to a pair of solid starts on the mound from senior Pat Kregeloh and sophomore Marcus Shippey.

In the nightcap, Shippey gave up seven hits in six innings with one run and six strikeouts while earning his first career win as a starter. Kregeloh gave up two earned runs off seven hits in seven innings with five strikeouts in a 110-pitch Game 1 effort that included one stretch in the middle innings in which he retired nine consecutive batters.

Senior Austin Bartley earned his second save of the season with two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh of Game 2. Junior Nick Massetti also pitched a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts in the opener.

Junior second baseman Jimmy Spanos went 4 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI in each game – a sacrifice fly in the opener and a single in Game 2. The only other Raider to drive in runs on the day was freshman catcher Jake Kennedy, whose two-run RBI double to right center capped off SU's third inning in the nightcap.

Junior first baseman/designated hitter Cody Ezolt and sophomore shortstop Mike Marcinko each recorded three hits on the day while Marcinko stole a pair of bases in the opener.

Shippensburg will make its home debut next weekend with a four-game series against Slippery Rock from Fairchild Field. The teams will play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon.

Game 1: California (Pa.) 3, Shippensburg 2

The Vulcans got off to a 2-0 start in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double courtesy of designated hitter David Marcus after a fielding error and a single to third base.

Ezolt led off the top of the fifth inning with a double before junior right fielder Austin Allison laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Ezolt to third, but a throwing error on the Cal catcher allowed Ezolt to take home and cut SU's deficit in half.

A leadoff single from senior third baseman Cal Hogan in the sixth became SU's tying run when he advanced to second on a Marcinko single, to third on a Kregeloh fly out and scored on a Spanos sacrifice fly to left. Cal responded with the eventual winning run in the seventh, however, with an RBI single to center.

Game 2: Shippensburg 3, California (Pa.) 1

After a pair of outs to start the third inning, Marcinko got things going with an infield single to third base before Kregeloh doubled down the left-field line. After Spanos's RBI single to right field, Kennedy ripped his two-run double on SU's fourth consecutive hit to score Kregeloh and Spanos.

Shippey went the first five innings without giving up a run before he got touched for three hits and a run – on an RBI single – in the sixth. Bartley allowed a leadoff double to start the seventh before striking out the next two batters looking and forcing a groundout to third to end the game.
