Senior first baseman Pat Kregeloh crushed three home runs on Sunday afternoon as six of the Shippensburg University baseball team's 19 hits went out of the park in a doubleheader sweep at Belmont Abbey. The Raiders won the opener, 5-3, before earning a 5-4 win in the nightcap to take the season-opening weekend series, 3-1, from Abbey Yard.

Kregeloh kicked off the day with a two-run home run down the left field line in the first inning of Game 1 before hitting lead-off solo jacks in the sixth inning of both games – the latter of which broke a 3-3 tie and put SU ahead for good. Junior designated hitter Jimmy Spanos hit a lead-off homer to left in the fourth inning of Game 1 that broke a 2-2 tie and also put the Raiders ahead for good.

Senior third baseman Cal Hogan hit a solo round-tripper to left in the first inning of Game 2 before freshman catcher Jake Kennedy hit a go-ahead, two-out, two-run home run to center in the fourth inning that erased a one-run deficit.

Freshman pitcher Mark Curtis made his first collegiate start in the opener and gave up just two runs off two hits in five innings with seven strikeouts for the victory. Junior Nick Massetti earned his second win of the weekend in Game 2 with a scoreless fifth inning after entering in place of senior starter Shawn Patterson, who gave up seven hits and three runs in four frames.

Freshman Josh Kutchey pitched the final two innings of the opener and earned the save while striking out two and giving up just one hit (a solo home run) in his collegiate debut. He also pitched two outs in the sixth inning of Game 2 while striking out one before being relieved by senior Austin Bartley, who earned the final four outs with one hit to earn the save.

Sophomore shortstop Mike Marcinko totaled a team-best four hits on the day, going 4-for-7 with a stolen base. Junior right fielder Austin Allison batted 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and a run scored in the second game.

Freshman Ryan McMillen made his collegiate debut and earned the start at second base in both games, finishing the day with a double as well as two RBIs on a single and a sacrifice fly.

Shippensburg travels to California (Pa.) next weekend for a three-game series against the PSAC West-foe Vulcans. The teams will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday before a noon single game on Sunday.
