Volleyball Cleans Up Attack to Dispatch East Stroudsburg in PSAC East Play, 3-0

SU commits just 11 errors Saturday as it evens its record at .500 (9-9)

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team rebounded from a Friday night loss with an efficient hitting performance Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 victory over PSAC East opponent East Stroudsburg by set scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-14.

Shippensburg (9-9, 3-6 PSAC) hit .248 as a team, committing just 11 errors, and swung .429 in the third and final set. Junior Faith Athey paced the Raiders with 10 kills, swinging .500 on 16 attempts, while fellow junior blocker Taylor Gottshall had eight kills, just two errors and an impressive six blocks.

Gottshall (366) is now second all-time in SU history for career blocks. She moved past Kali Antolik '09 (363) in Saturday's match. She also added two service aces for the second straight match.

Freshman Courtney Malott knocked eight kills and had just one attack error, hitting .280 on 25 swings, while sophomore Annie Goerl had seven kills and 11 digs.

Sophomore setter Maura Nolan had four kills, 29 assists, seven digs and three block assists. Junior libero Laura Plank led the Raiders with 15 digs while junior Casey Hawbaker added eight digs of her own.

Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg (5-12, 1-8) were tied 15-15 in the first set before the Raiders managed three straight points that led to a Warrior timeout. The momentum officially swung in SU's favor as an ESU attack appeared to be a kill but was deemed to have not hit off a Raider, continuing a run of six straight points for the home team.

The second set had tie scores of 17-17, 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20 before the Raiders benefitted from a Goerl kill in between three Warrior errors (two service, one ball-handling) that helped establish its decisive edge. SU closed the match taking seven of the final eight points in the third set.

SU is away from Heiges Field House for two weeks. Next weekend, the Raiders travel to Edinboro and Slippery Rock for the second PSAC crossover weekend.
