Volleyball Rallies for Victory in Four at East Stroudsburg in PSAC East Match

SU drops opening set before winning in four; Gottshall paces Raiders with 12 kills

The Shippensburg University volleyball team had three players produce double-digit kills and served 10 aces Friday night, overcoming a first-set loss to defeat PSAC East opponent East Stroudsburg in four sets at Koehler Fieldhouse. Set scores were 24-26, 25-16, 25-20 and 27-25.

Shippensburg (15-14, 8-11 PSAC) received a dynamic outing from sophomore setter Maura Nolan, who had five kills without an error (hitting .556), 41 assists, 14 digs, three block assists and two service aces. SU also got a 12-kill, five-block effort from junior Taylor Gottshall.

Sophomore Annie Goerl posted her fifth straight double-double, posting 10 kills and 15 digs in addition to three service aces. Junior Faith Athey added 11 kills and swung .208.

Redshirt-freshman Brittany Whitacre received time off the bench, playing in all four sets and posting eight kills in addition to three block assists.

Junior libero Laura Plank led all players with 27 digs.

With Lock Haven defeating West Chester in five sets on Friday night and Millersville defeating Kutztown in five sets, the Raiders moved into a third-place tie with the Golden Rams. However, SU holds the tiebreaker over West Chester despite a season split because the Raiders won their match in straight sets while the Golden Rams needed four sets for their win.

More importantly, it also means SU and West Chester are two games ahead of fifth-place Kutztown and Millersville with three conference matches remaining in the regular season.

SU is at Kutztown on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against the Golden Bears. KU defeated SU in four sets earlier this season and with a victory would hold a tiebreaker over the Raiders.
