The Shippensburg University men's soccer team made a strong second-half rally as sophomore
David Katz netted his first two collegiate goals, but the Raiders ultimately fell short, 3-2, on Friday afternoon to No. 13 Mercyhurst from David See Field.
The Raiders (3-4-1, 1-2 PSAC) first got on the board in the 73rd minute when senior
Fred Lucas delivered an accurate entry into the box off a free kick and Katz was able to redirect it past the keeper.
In the 89th minute, freshman
Colt Arnold launched the ball into the box from a throw-in on the left side before sophomore
Robert Furfaro made an acrobatic bicycle pass into traffic in front of the net where Katz was waiting to bury it.
Mercyhurst (8-2, 2-1 PSAC) opened the scoring in the fourth minute on a free kick from the left side just outside the box. The Lakers then added goals in the 12th and 33rd minutes in a first half in which they out-shot the Raiders 16-0, and held a 27-3 shot advantage on the contest.
Sophomore
Evan Raimist totaled eight saves, tying a career high, and made several impressive stops on the afternoon.
The Raiders return to action Saturday when they take on Gannon at 4 p.m. from David See Field.
The team is continuing to sell #ALS wristbands for $2 with all proceeds going to the ALS Foundation.
