Red Raiders Snap Skid With Win Over Lock Haven, 42-24, as Harman Ties PSAC Receiving TDs Record

Harman ties M. Washington with 58 rec. TDs; Brooks goes over 2K career rushing yards

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team scored touchdowns on its first three possessions of each half Saturday afternoon to key a 42-24 victory over PSAC East opponent Lock Haven from Hubert Jack Stadium as senior Trevor Harman tied the all-time PSAC record for career receiving touchdowns.

On a day in which junior quarterback Chris Lawshe completed a career-high 35-of-45 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, Harman was the recipient of two of those scoring throws. Harman has 15 receptions against the Bald Eagles for the second straight year, the second-most in a single game in SU history (he holds the record with 18 in 2012 at Kutztown), and now has 58 career receiving touchdowns to tie West Chester's Mike Washington.

Shippensburg (3-3, 2-3 PSAC) allowed a field goal to Lock Haven (0-6, 0-4) on the opening drive but responded with a 10-play, 69 yard touchdown drive of its own that was capped off by a 14-yard grab by Harman.

The Red Raiders settled for a field-goal attempt on their second drive but Lock Haven lined up offside, and the five-yard penalty resulted in a first down at the four-yard line. On the next play, senior Blair Brooks pummeled through the right side of the line to give the Red Raiders a 14-3 advantage.

Less than a minute into the second quarter, Lawshe found junior Sheldon Mayer open down the middle for a 65-yard touchdown that made the score 21-3. Mayer and Harman each finished with 97 receiving yards.

Lock Haven used a trick-play reverse pass on the first play of the game that went for 33 yards to set up its field goal but was bottled up until scoring a touchdown with 2:47 remaining in the half, making the score 21-10 at halftime. SU attempted a 24-yard field goal on the final play of the first half that was blocked.

In a game that featured five scoring drives of 10 or more plays, it was the Red Raiders who began the second half with a 17-play series that ended with Brooks scoring from one yard out. Brooks entered this season without any double-digit touchdown games in his career, but the SU senior has now scored multiple rushing touchdowns in three of six games this year.

Brooks also became the eighth player in school history to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards and just the third in the last 15 years. He has 2,005 career yards on just 334 carries – an average of 6.0 yards per rush. Through 98 carries this season, he has been stopped just six times for negative yards.

Harman tied the PSAC record with a two-yard score in the final minute of the third quarter, and just 25 seconds later, junior linebacker Cortlin Dell picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown to make the score 42-10.

Dell's first career "pick-six" is the second this season by an SU linebacker, as senior Brian Sourber had one against Edinboro, and now all three of the Red Raider starting linebackers have at least one interception return for a touchdown in their career.

Lawshe had one of the best all-around starts of his still-blossoming career, as he used his running ability to scramble for two first downs and escape several other precarious situations. After setting the school record last week for the most career rushing yards by a quarterback, Lawshe ran for 73 more yards on Saturday. He now has 269 yards this season and 760 in his career.

Lawshe also distributed the ball extremely well, as 11 different receivers caught a pass in Saturday's game. Among the beneficiaries was senior tight end Alex Kuljian, who had career highs of four receptions and 39 receiving yards.

For just the second time in the last 15 games, SU won the turnover margin. The Red Raiders did not commit a turnover for the first time since Week 4 of last season (an interception was overturned because of a penalty) and finished with two takeaways, as redshirt-freshman safety Zak Dakes recorded his first career interception in the third quarter.

Sourber led the SU defense with eight tackles. Junior Kurt Walker had SU's lone sack of the day – the first solo sack of his career. Sophomore defensive back Aaron Sye made his first start for the Red Raiders and totaled five tackles.

SU dominated time of possession – holding a 38:02 – 21:58 advantage. The Red Raiders also had the ball for more than 23 of the 30 minutes in the second half.

The game was littered in penalties. SU was flagged 15 times – its most in a game in more than 16 years – while Lock Haven was penalized eight times.

The win also marks SU's 11th-straight victory over Lock Haven.

Shippensburg travels to No. 10 West Chester next weekend for a 2 p.m. clash with the Golden Rams.

Notes: SU continued to have long, time-consuming drives, as the Red Raiders have already had 13 touchdown drives this season last at least three minutes after having seven such drives in all of 2013...the 17-play touchdown drive for the Red Raiders in the third quarter is its longest in terms of plays since Nov. 10, 2001, when Matt Phillips scored on a 2-yard run to cap off a 17-play, 80-yard drive…SU did have its memorable 21-play drive last year at Bloomsburg but it ended with a turnover on downs…for the second time this season, the Red Raiders converted five fourth downs in a single game…SU has rushed for at least 150 yards in five of six games this season; equaling their team total from a year ago…SU is 10-4 when Mayer and Harman catch a touchdown in the same game…Harman has now caught multiple touchdowns in 17 career games and at least one touchdown in 15 of his last 16 games…Mayer has caught a touchdown in six straight games.
