Biography

2014 (R-Junior): Named to the All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Region Second Team after a dynamic year at wide receiver…led the Red Raiders and ranked second in the PSAC in receiving yards (1,099 – sixth-most in SU history)…averaged 15.3 yards per catch…totaled 72 receptions (sixth-most in SU history), including a career-long 88-yard touchdown against Seton Hill (fifth-longest passing touchdown in SU history)…maintained his role as the team’s primary punt returner, leading the team with 16 returns and 171 punt return yards (10.7 per return)…also had a 24-yard kickoff return against California…was just one of four 1,000-yard receivers in the PSAC…caught 11 touchdowns, tying for the team lead and ranking 19th in Division II…started out the season with nine catches, 194 receiving yards and a touchdown at Seton Hill…amassed a season-high 198 receiving yards on a career-high 14 receptions in the season finale at Mercyhurst…tallied 12 receptions, 160 receiving yards and two touchdowns at Bloomsburg…that performance was the second of three consecutive two-touchdown games (eight catches, 115 yards versus California, seven catches, 113 yards versus East Stroudsburg)…also caught touchdown passes against Edinboro, Lock Haven, Millersville and Kutztown…hauled in at least one touchdown pass in the first six games of the season and in 8-of-11 overall…reeled in multiple receptions in 10-of-11 games…ran four times for 35 yards and a touchdown against Cheyney in a game that SU did not employ a traditional quarterback…recorded 1,311 multi-purpose yards for the season, including a season-best 212 yards in the season finale at Mercyhurst…averaged 119 all-purpose yards per game…managed five 100-yard receiving games and at least five receptions of 50+ yards…completed a 34-yard pass at Millersville…credited with a tackle in the opener against Seton Hill.
 
2013 (R-Sophomore): Thrived as a full-time starter at wide receiver and the team’s primary punt returner en route to being named to the All-PSAC East First Team at both receiver and return specialist…ranked among the PSAC leaders with 63 catches (tied for sixth) for 897 yards (fifth) and eight touchdowns (tied for sixth)…led the conference in returns (22), yards (303) and average per return (13.8, 12th-best in Division II)…led SU with 14.2 yards per catch…third on the team with 1,293 all-purpose yards…first Red Raider since 2006 to earn First Team return specialist conference accolades…returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown at Slippery Rock, becoming the first SU player in 15 seasons to take a punt back to the house…244 yards receiving on nationally-televised victory at Bloomsburg was second-most in a game in school history…two receiving touchdowns at Bloomsburg went for 84 and 77 yards…84-yarder was a career long reception and the seventh-longest in school history…also had two receiving scores at Millersville…had a career-high 11 catches for 163 yards and a score against Kutztown…totaled 102 yards on six catches vs. West Chester…also had receiving touchdowns vs. Slippery Rock, East Stroudsburg and Seton Hill…threw a 46-yard touchdown vs. Seton Hill…rushed for a touchdown vs. Kutztown…also returned four kickoffs for 93 yards on the season (third-most on the team)…given the George & Meriem Kaluger Award for special teams player of the year at the team banquet.
 
2012 (R-Freshman): Completed the transition from running back to wide receiver in his second full season on the field with the Red Raiders while also serving as the team’s primary punt returner…appeared in 12 of the team’s 13 games…made starts against LIU Post, IUP and Winston-Salem State…ranked sixth on the team with 26 receptions for 243 yards and three touchdowns…led the squad with 14 punt returns for an average of 11.6 yards per run back…had a season-long punt return of 32 yards versus Millersville in a game that he netted a career-high 83 punt return yards…tallied three punt returns in the regular season versus Bloomsburg…caught at least one pass in 10 games, including a career-high six receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown at ESU…also hauled in touchdown passes against Slippery Rock and Lock Haven…finished with five receptions for 36 yards at Lock Haven.
 
2011 (Freshman): Earned significant playing time in the first three games of the season before a major injury ended his season…ultimately granted a medical hardship waiver...finished with 109 yards on 19 carries, good for a 5.7 average, while also catching three balls for 55 yards and a score…caught a 37-yard touchdown pass in the season opener against Shepherd…also carried the ball six times for 31 yards against the Rams…toted the rock 10 times for 37 yards (both career highs) in the next game, at Gannon, while adding 18 yards on two receptions…got loose for a career-long 38-yard burst against Clarion and finished the game with three carries for 41 yards while also returning a kickoff 14 yards.
 
2010 (Freshman): Attended Shippensburg; competed with the team during the spring.
 
Norristown High School: Played tailback for the Eagles under head coach E.J. Smith and Brian Kennedy…earned All-Suburban One First Team honors…achieved All-Pennsylvania honorable mention…also played basketball and track & field.
 
About Mayer: Full name is Sheldon Mayer…is the son of Arthur and Maxine Mayer…majoring in human communications studies…has five siblings: Sean, Steven, Arthur, Shannon and Sheena…Shannon is a wide receiver at West Chester.
