The No. 32 Shippensburg University men's cross country team competed in the “Brown” 8K race at the 2012 Paul Short Invitational on Friday afternoon from Bethlehem and posted an eighth-place team finish, with the Top 5 runners all crossing the finish line under 27 minutes.

Shippensburg slotted second among the PSAC teams in the race, with ESU (4th), IUP (10th), West Chester (18th) and Kutztown (20th)  also taking part. ESU senior Frank Fezza won the individual crown by crossing the finish line in 25:03.

Senior Matt Gillette ran 13 seconds ahead of his pace from last year's “Gold” race, finishing fourth overall on Friday with a time of 25:19. Gillette finished over a minute ahead of his teammates and was the No. 2 PSAC finisher in the race, trailing only Fezza.

Sophomore Bernard England ended up as SU's No. 2 runner after placing 54th in 26:26, a 45-second improvement from last year.

Senior Brian Quintrell impressed as the team's No. 4 runner, staying in the main Raider pack throughout the race and finishing 79th in 26:39. Quintrell's finish is almost a full two-minute improvement from his run at last year's Paul Short Invite and is also 12 seconds faster than his 8K season PR of a year ago.

Quintrell was flanked by a pair of freshmen: Austin McGinley and Braden Bruning. McGinley finished two seconds ahead of Quintrell for a 75th-place finish in 26:39 as SU's No. 3 runner, while Bruning was five seconds behind Quintrell and served as the No. 5 runner.

The Raiders were packed together through the first mile, as all five of the team's scoring performers came through between 5:07 and 5:12.

McGinley and Bruning were two of five SU true freshmen who competed in their first collegiate 8K. Chris Mullin completed his run in 27:10 while Mike Bilotta was just 10 seconds behind.

Sophomore Peter Gelston was one slot out of scoring position for the Raiders after finishing the 8K in 27:03.

SU returns to action in two weeks from Gettysburg. Those races will be the final tune-up before the PSAC Championships on October 20.
