SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior pitcher
Nick Umberger had a masterful performance from the mound in Game 1 and junior center fielder
Cody Kulp and sophomore first baseman
Dan Wimer each drove in two runs in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon to complete a doubleheader sweep of No. 1 West Chester from Fairchild Field. SU won the opener 3-1 and the nightcap 7-3.
The Raiders (23-15, 9-7 PSAC East) snapped West Chester's (25-3, 10-2 PSAC East) PSAC-record 20-game winning streak, as the Golden Rams lone loss on the season had come on March 11 to Minnesota-Duluth.
Umberger pitched a complete game to run his record to 6-2, striking out seven and giving up just four hits to WCU, which came into the week leading the PSAC in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
Kulp went 3-for-6 on the day, showcasing his slugging ability with a home run and two doubles. He hit a first inning solo home run in Game 2 and an RBI double down the left field line in the fifth that broke a 3-3 tie and gave SU the lead for good.
Sophomore
Pat Kregeloh earned his third victory of the season in Game 2, as the right-hander gave up two earned runs in five innings of six-hit ball. Sophomore
Austin Bartley was perfect over the final two innings in earning his first save of the season.
Senior
Jimmy Miller – playing the corner infield spots after having pitched against the Golden Rams on Friday – went 3-for-3 in Game 2 with two runs scored. Junior right fielder
Tyler Basso was 3-for-6 on the day, including an RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 2 to put SU up 6-3.
Shippensburg travels to Lock Haven on Tuesday for a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
Game 1: Shippensburg 3, West Chester 1
Umberger and West Chester starting pitcher Dave Stieg – who also went the distance while giving up four hits – dueled for the first half of the contest, combining to give up just one hit in the first four innings.
The Raiders finally touched Stieg in the fourth however, beginning with a Kulp double down the left field line. Junior left fielder
Simon Beloff followed with a walk, and both runners advanced a base with a groundout from junior catcher
Tyler Shover for the second out of the inning.
Kregeloh then hit a grounder to the WCU shortstop, whose throw to first base for the putout was low and skipped toward the Shippensburg bullpen, allowing both Kulp and Beloff to cross home plate for a 2-0 lead.
West Chester cut the deficit in half in the top of the next inning with two leadoff singles that later lead to a run scored on a passed ball. With one out and a man on second base, Umberger made a clutch turn-around pickoff at second base on a throw to senior shortstop
Eric Herman. Umberger then struck out the batter at the plate to end the Golden Rams' threat.
Leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Raiders managed to manufacture a huge insurance run for Umberger. After two groundouts to begin the frame, Shover walked and stole second, setting the stage for a Kregeloh RBI single to center field and a 3-1 SU margin.
WCU led off the top of the seventh with a leadoff double, but Umberger benefited in the next at-bat on a great fielding decision from Herman. West Chester's Jordan Wlodarczyk – the conference leader in batting average with a .544 clip entering the week – grounded to the shortstop, who went to Kregeloh at third base for the tag out of the runner coming from second.
With a man on first and one out, Umberger then ended the game with a line out and a fly out.
Game 2: Shippensburg 7, West Chester 3
The Golden Rams briefly got to Kregeloh early, with clean-up hitter Chris Pula launching a two-run home run to left field in the first inning. The Raiders earned a run back in the bottom half of the first, however, with Kulp's home run, and took the lead in the second.
After a Kregeloh walk and a
Jimmy Miller single up the middle, Wimer plated the two runners with a two-RBI double down the left field line for his first extra-base hit and RBI of the season.
WCU answered in the top of the third, tying the game at 3 with an RBI single, and later nearly took the lead in the top of the fifth. With a man on first and two outs, West Chester's Joe Wendle hit a double to right field. Basso's relay throw from right field found cutoff man Wimer, who gunned down the base runner at home plate with Shover laying the tag.
The Raiders carried over the momentum into the bottom of the fifth, beginning with a Herman leadoff single through the right side. Kulp ripped a double into the left field corner to plate Herman and later advanced to third on a Beloff groundout before scoring on a wild pitch for a 5-2 SU lead.
The two additional runs that came in the bottom of the sixth proved to be more than enough for Bartley in his stellar relief appearance. Basso singled home a run before – with runners at the corners and one out – Herman batted in a run with a fielder's choice grounder for a 7-3 lead.
