EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team completed its weekend sweep of East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon with a pair of 6-4 and 8-7 victories that gave the team 30 wins on the year and clinched the Raiders the Eastern Division No. 2 seed at next week's 2012 PSAC Baseball Tournament.
The Raiders (30-19, 15-9 PSAC East) will play Western Division No. 3 seed California (Pa.) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. from Pullman Park in Butler, Pa. SU enters the conference tournament with 30 regular season wins, the first time it has reached that mark since the 2008 team that went to the College World Series.
With Saturday's opener tied at 4-4 in extra innings, freshman pinch hitter
Cody Ezolt hit a go-ahead two-run, two-out single in the top of the 10th inning that would prove to be the game-winning hit. Redshirt senior
Kody Kibler then closed the game out by pitching the 10th and striking out the final ESU (24-21-1, 8-15-1) batter to earn his ninth save of the season and fourth in a five-game span.
Junior
Josh Scott earned the victory in Game 1 in giving up just one hit while pitching the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Sophomore
Pat Kregeloh earned the Game 2 victory after giving up four runs on six hits while striking out four in four innings. Junior
Tyler Basso pitched the seventh to nab his second save of the season.
Junior
Tom Bush earned the start in the opener and gave up three earned runs off four hits in two innings of work. Junior
Cam Richardson then pitched four innings of middle-relief and gave up two hits while fanning two. In the nightcap, sophomore
Shawn Patterson pitched the fifth and sixth innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits.
Freshman second baseman
Jimmy Spanos went 3-for-5 in the opener with two RBI singles as well as an RBI sacrifice fly in Game 2. Sophomore designated hitter
Dan Wimer hit a two-RBI triple in the third inning of the nightcap and finished the game with three RBIs.
Wednesday will mark the third straight PSAC Tournament appearance that Shippensburg has played the Vulcans on the first day. Last season, SU lost to Cal, 13-6. In the Raiders' previous appearance, in 2009, they lost 6-2 to the Vulcans.
Game 1: Shippensburg 6, East Stroudsburg 4 (10 innings)
Senior left fielder
Eric Herman led off the game by reaching second base on a fielding error from East Stroudsburg's shortstop. Spanos then drove Herman home with a single. Later, with two outs, Spanos advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single by Kregeloh. The Warriors cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first with a run on an RBI groundout.
With two outs in the top of the second, senior shortstop
Ben Miller hit a double and then scored on a Herman single. Herman, who advanced to second on the throw, then scored in the next at-bat with a Spanos single for a 4-1 Shippensburg lead.
But the Warriors would again answer back, this time scoring three runs off two hits, two walks and an SU throwing error in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 4. The offensive display for both teams would abruptly end there, however, as both squads would combine for six hits and zero runs over the next seven innings.
Finally, in the 10th inning, the Raiders would find home plate. Junior center fielder
Cody Kulp led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior right fielder
Simon Beloff. Senior
Jimmy Miller was then intentionally walked before a Basso walk to load the bases.
Two at-bats later, with two outs, Ezolt came in to pinch hit and hit the eventual game-winning single to score Kulp and
Jimmy Miller for a 6-4 Raiders advantage.
Game 2: Shippensburg 8, East Stroudsburg 7
East Stroudsburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a double, three singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. The Raiders would get two of those runs back in the top of the second, however, beginning with a Beloff single and a Basso walk. Beloff would advance to third on a double play before scoring on a Wimer single.
Junior catcher
Steve Sulcoski and
Ben Miller then walked to load the bases before Herman brought Wimer home on a walk in the next at-bat.
Shippensburg managed to tie the game in the next inning, starting with a Basso two-out single.
Jimmy Miller then walked before both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. Wimer then hit his triple to score both runners and tie the game at 4 runs apiece.
Ben Miller led off with a walk in the next frame and scored in the following at-bat on a throwing error on a bunt from Herman, who advanced all the way to third. Spanos then hit his sacrifice fly to left field to plate Herman and put the Raiders up 6-4.
SU added two more runs in the sixth inning to go up 8-4. Kulp hit an RBI triple that scored Herman – who led the inning off with a walk – before scoring himself on an RBI single from Beloff. Those runs proved valuable, however, as ESU managed to score three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to get within 8-7.
