BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Senior center fielder
Eric Herman and junior left fielder
Simon Beloff each hit two-RBI triples on Friday afternoon as the Shippensburg University baseball team split a road PSAC East doubleheader at Bloomsburg. SU dropped the opener, 4-3, before taking Game 2 by a score of 5-2.
With the Game 2 triumph, the Raiders reached the 20-win plateau for the season – nearly a full month earlier than they had reached that mark last season (April 26, 2011 against East Stroudsburg).
Herman went 3-for-7 over the two games and scored two runs, with his triple the game-winner for the Raiders (20-12, 6-4 PSAC East) in Game 2. Beloff smacked his two-run triple in Game 1 and finished the day with two hits and a run scored.
Senior left-hander
Nick Umberger settled down after allowing a three-run first inning from Bloomsburg (14-12, 4-6 PSAC East) in Game 1 and gave up just three hits and struck out seven over his final five innings for the no-decision.
Sophomore
Pat Kregeloh earned the start in Game 2 and went six innings deep, giving up just two earned runs on nine hits while fanning five to earn his second victory of the year. Redshirt senior
Kody Kibler pitched the seventh and earned his team-leading fourth save.
The Raiders will return home tomorrow for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Huskies from Fairchild Field, weather permitting.
Game 1: Bloomsburg 4, Shippensburg 3
After giving up five hits and three earned runs in the bottom of the first inning, Umberger settled down and gave up just three hits over the next five innings.
Down 3-0 heading into the fifth, the Raiders offense rallied back. After two out to start the inning, Herman and junior center fielder
Cody Kulp each reached base on back-to-back errors by BU infielders, setting the stage for Beloff's two-RBI triple to center field that brought SU within one.
Shippensburg tied it up at three in the sixth after Kregeloh ripped a double down the left field line. Senior third baseman
Jimmy Miller followed that up with a single to right center, allowing junior right fielder
Tyler Basso to score Kregeloh in the next at-bat with an unassisted groundout to first base.
Sophomore left-handed reliever
Austin Bartley came in in relief of Umberger to pitch the seventh and loaded the bases by allowing singles from the first three batters. Bartley then hit the next batter to plate Bloomsburg's game-winning run.
Game 2: Shippensburg 5, Bloomsburg 2
The Raiders kicked off the scoring in the second inning, with Beloff and sophomore designated hitter
Kyle Hollingsworth each singling to lead off the inning. Two batters later,
Jimmy Miller drove in Beloff with a single through the left side for a 1-0 lead.
After giving up three singles but holding Bloomsburg scoreless in the first inning, Kregeloh gave up another three singles in the second frame and allowed a run. From that point on, however, Kregeloh was solid from the mound, allowing three hits and one run over his final four innings of work.
Down 2-1 after four, Shippensburg made its comeback in the top of the fifth inning. Senior shortstop
Ben Miller led off with a single and freshman second baseman
Jimmy Spanos reached second base on an error by BU's third baseman, setting the stage for Herman's two-run triple to center field in the next at-bat.
After
Ben Miller and Spanos scored, Herman wound up being able to cross home himself, thanks to an error from the Huskies' center fielder that gave Shippensburg a 4-2 lead.
The Raiders added another run in the sixth, with
Jimmy Miller doubling down the left field line and Basso following up with a single.
Jimmy Miller advanced to third on the hit and scored on an error by the Bloomsburg second baseman.
