UPDATE: Saturday's doubleheader at Millersville has been postponed; re-scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. from Marauder Park.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team cranked out 12 runs and 17 hits on a picturesque Friday afternoon from Fairchild Field and received complete-game efforts from both of its starting pitchers en route to a doubleheader sweep of defending regional champion Millersville, 5-2 and 7-4.

Shippensburg (16-11, 3-3 PSAC East) received strong pitching on Friday from seniors Nick Umberger and Jimmy Miller. Umberger improved to 5-2 by allowing just two runs on six hits and striking out four in 92 pitches. Miller ran his record to 4-1 by allowing four runs (three earned) and striking out six over the course of 106 pitches.

The Raiders overcame seven errors in the doubleheader by turning five double plays – four on the ground and another on a lineout. Additionally, Umberger walked just one batter in his complete-game effort while Miller did not issue a free pass.

Freshman second baseman Jimmy Spanos got hits in his first five at-bats on Friday, going 3-for-3 with a double in the opening game before providing a triple over the center fielder's head and a double off the third-base bag in his first two at-bats of the second game. In addition to his five hits, Spanos finished with an RBI, stolen base and four runs scored.

Millersville (12-10, 2-4 PSAC East) was swept in a PSAC doubleheader for the first time since April 2010. Marauder ace Brooks Rothschild had won 11 consecutive regular season starts before taking the loss in Friday's opener, allowing five earned runs and six hits in 5.1 innings. Rothschild yielded three runs in the first inning – marking just the fourth time in his career that an opponent has achieved the feat against him.

Notes: Friday marked the first time since Apr. 10, 2010 that both Raider pitchers threw complete games in a PSAC East doubleheader. Miller dropped a 3-1 decision to East Stroudsburg that day while senior Ted Williams (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was the beneficiary of 18 runs to win the other game.

Game 1: Shippensburg 5, Millersville 2

The Raiders countered a first-inning run by the Marauders with three in the bottom of the frame. Spanos singled up the middle before sophomore designated hitter Kyle Hollingsworth worked the count full and ultimately drew a walk.

On a 3-1 pitch, junior Cody Kulp crushed a ball into the left-center field gap to plate both runners. Kulp started in center field Friday – the first time in his Raider career that he has played the position.

Junior left fielder Simon Beloff moved Kulp over on a groundout and junior catcher Tyler Shover then brought him home with a sacrifice fly.

Marauder right fielder Chris Edgar, who went 3-for-3 in the opener and 5-for-7 overall in Friday's doubleheader, homered to lead off the second, but that would be the last run they would plate in the game. Senior Eric Herman manufactured a run in the bottom of the second by drawing a two-out walk, stealing second base, advancing to third on a wild pitch and then scoring on an infield hit by Spanos. Sophomore Pat Kregeloh singled home a run in the sixth.

Umberger induced double-play ground balls to end the fourth and sixth innings before retiring the side in order in the top of the seventh inning to end the game. He has now thrown complete games in three of his six starts this season.

Game 2: Shippensburg 7, Millersville 4

Both teams scored a run in the opening inning – the Marauders on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Zach Stone and the Raiders on a RBI-single by Kulp.

The difference was a huge third inning for the Raiders in which they batted around, scored four runs and had the bounces go their way. Herman beat out a bunt to start the inning with a single before Spanos hit a bouncer down the third-base line that hopped off the bag before it could go into Stone's glove and ultimately went for a double. Hollingsworth fouled out to left field, but the ball was hit far enough to score Herman and move Spanos to third base.

In the next at-bat, Kulp hit a ball to Stone but his throw home was wide, allowing Spanos to score and Kulp to reach second base. Beloff, Shover and Kregeloh all followed with singles – with Beloff's and Kregeloh's driving in runners – to give the Raiders their sizable advantage.

Hollingsworth and Shover provided RBI-singles in the fourth to give SU a 7-2 cushion. The Marauders added a run in the fourth and the sixth – both off the bat of designated hitter Dan Johnson.

Beloff was 3-for-4, while Shover was 2-for-4. Seven of the nine Raider starters had at least one hit in the contest.
