SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior pitchers Nick Umberger and Jimmy Miller each struck out six batters en route to complete game victories on Saturday afternoon as the Shippensburg University baseball team swept a doubleheader over Gannon that began a four-game weekend home series against the Golden Knights from Fairchild Field.

The Raiders (10-5) shut out Gannon (7-7) in the opener with a 3-0 win before notching a 5-1 victory in Game 2.

Umberger (4-1) gave up six hits and walked one in the shutout Game 1 victory – the lefthander's third complete game this season – while Jimmy Miller (3-0) allowed three hits and an earned run in Game 2.

The two teams will begin tomorrow's Sunday doubleheader at noon from Fairchild Field.

Game 1: Shippensburg 3, Gannon 0

Junior right fielder Cody Kulp kicked things off in the first inning by smacking his second home run of the season – a two-run blast to left center that plated freshman second baseman Jimmy Spanos.

The early runs became crucial, as Gannon pitcher Paul McKenna held the SU offense in check for most of the game and finished with nine strikeouts and just three hits in a complete-game six-inning effort.

The Raiders were able to manufacture an insurance run in the sixth inning, however, when a McKenna wild pitch with junior left fielder Simon Beloff at the plate allowed senior center fielder Eric Herman to score from third.

Kulp and senior shortstop Ben Miller had each previously singled in the inning and were the only players to finish the game with at least a hit. Kulp went 2-for-3 while Ben Miller went 1-for-2.

Game 2: Shippensburg 5, Gannon 1

Gannon's Evan Baglieri gave the Golden Knights an early 1-0 lead by homering to left field to lead off the second inning. The pitch proved to be one of few mistakes on the day for Jimmy Miller, however, as the righthander gave up just two hits in the remaining five innings.

The Raiders took the lead with a big third inning, kicked off with singles from Ben Miller and Spanos to lead off the inning. After a Kulp walk to load the bases, Beloff ripped a two-RBI single to right field that put Shippensburg on top, 2-1.

Kulp later scored on a Gannon fielding error, and sophomore designated hitter Kyle Hollingsworth followed up a walk from junior catcher Tyler Shover with an RBI single that scored Beloff.

Spanos added an RBI in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored sophomore first baseman Pat Kregeloh.

Ben Miller went 2-for-2 on the game while Beloff went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
