SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University wrestling team won six of the eight contested bouts on Friday night from Heiges Field House, notching bonus points in three, to record a 37-9 dual meet victory over Anderson (S.C.). SU has achieved its most dual meet victories in one season since the 1998-99 campaign.
Shippensburg (12-10) opened the match with three straight wins. Freshman
Colten Keck achieved a 3-2 decision at 125 pounds and picked up his sixth victory of the season. Keck used a first-period takedown to establish the tempo and won by securing an escape later in the match.
Sophomore
Cody Myers and junior
Simon Rice each picked up victories by fall. Myers notched his team-leading seventh pin of the year in 2:26 over Keenan Simmons while Rice put Ian Harper on his back in 4:29. It was the second straight pin for Rice and his fifth of the season.
At 157 pounds, sophomore
John Lindquist was awarded a point in the first period after his opponent was called for an illegal headlock and that proved to be the only scoring in seven minutes. Neither Lindquist nor Nicholas Giulliette could achieve an escape in the final two periods after the other started on the bottom, resulting in four minutes of riding.
Freshman Neil Grudi continued his impressive work at 165 pounds with a 12-0 major decision over Dalton Harper. Grudi had a pair of three-point near falls to help secure his 11th victory of the season. He has now won seven of his last eight matches.
Freshman
Dylan Treaster picked up his first collegiate victory with an 8-3 decision at 174 pounds. Treaster earned a takedown and a two-point near fall in the first period to build a 4-1 lead in the first period. He notched another takedown in the second period.
SU's only two losses were the result of points being awarded in the final seconds of regulation in each bout.
Sophomore
Kenny Stank had a 7-6 lead at 149 pounds but was docked for stalling just before the horn, sending the match into overtime. His opponent, Dan Telhada, achieved a three-point near fall in the second overtime and ultimately earned a victory by injury default after a dangerous position move occurred in the third period.
Freshman
Dan Fultz was about to head into an extra session with Jordan Denmark at 197 pounds but was taken down at the last second. Denmark was down at the time, 3-2, but was due an extra point because of a significant riding time advantage.
Anderson (4-22) always wrestles hard for their head coach, Dock Kelly. Despite being undermanned, the Trojans grappled through the final whistle in several bouts. Two of the decisions they dropped were by just one point. It was the team's second loss this season to the Raiders, as SU earned a 31-10 victory in January at the N.C. State Duals.
Shippensburg will honor seniors
Tyler Zittle and
James Reilley before its final home dual meet of the season on Tuesday from Heiges Field House. The Raiders will face No. 8 Pittsburgh-Johnstown with the first bout scheduled for 7 p.m.
