Bobby Scheivert placed third at 165 pounds – the best conference finish by a Raider wrestler in three years – to lead three place-winners for the Shippensburg University wrestling team at the 2012 PSAC Wrestling Championships held Saturday inside Kutztown University's Keystone Arena.
Redshirt-freshman
Cameron Throckmorton [133 pounds] and senior
Tyler Erdman [141 pounds] each placed fifth at their respective weight class to help Shippensburg place seventh overall – its best finish at the PSAC championships since taking fifth in 2007.
Scheivert went 3-1 on the day, with his only loss coming in the opener to No. 1 seed Johnny Greisheimer of Edinboro (11-3). The unseeded Raider freshman responded with bonus points in each of his next three bouts. He started with a pin of Mercyhurst's Clint Schaefer, the No. 5 seed, in 1:30. No. 3 seed Bionojel Candelaria of Kutztown was the next to fall to Scheivert, getting pinned on the mat with 15 seconds remaining.
In the third-place match, Scheivert took on Clarion's Nick Milano and reeled off a major decision, 13-4, to cap off an impressive day. Scheivert is SU's highest PSAC place-winner since Chris Barrick earned second place at 174 pounds in 2009.
Throckmorton performed well in wrestlebacks to achieve his place-winning performance. After a 6-5 loss in his opening bout, Throckmorton rallied with a 16-3 major decision over Gannon's Edward Marshall and an 11-3 major decision over Millersville's Kyle Loeb. After dropping a 12-6 decision to Clarion'a Joe Waltko, the No. 3 seed, Throckmorton capped off the day with a 4-2 sudden victory over Lock Haven's Matt Bryer.
Erdman, like Throckmorton, went 3-2 on the day. After an opening-round loss, Erdman pinned Millersville's Nick LaFlair in 2:46 and picked up a 5-1 decision over East Stroudsburg's Joseph Hoy. A hard-fought 10-7 loss to Bloomsburg's Matt Rappo prefaced a medical default in the fifth-place bout.
Two other Raiders picked up victories on Saturday – freshman
Mark Lentz earned a 9-4 decision at 149 pounds over Gannon's Michael Krysiak – and junior
John Lindquist nabbed a 19-6 major decision over Gannon's Casey Pace.
Shippensburg's next competition is a dual meet at Seton Hill on January 9.
