SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University wrestling squad won five of the eight contested bouts on Thursday night to edge past Seton Hill, the region's No. 9-ranked squad, 22-15, from Heiges Field House. SU entered the match ranked eighth in Super Region I.
Shippensburg (5-6) maintained a 19-15 entering the heavyweight match between SU junior
Dan Estricher, the region's No. 5-ranked wrestler, and SHU senior Ron Oswald, the region's No. 4-ranked wrestler.
The scoring was confined to escapes in regulation and seemed destined to go into the second and third overtime periods until Estricher's final shot before the horn took down Oswald with no time to spare. Estricher had nearly ended the match with a takedown on a move he began in the final 15 seconds. His overall record is now 10-2, including 10-1 in dual meet competition.
Freshman Neil Grudi won the only match of the night that resulted in bonus points, as he earned a 12-1 major decision over Kurt McCamley. The only point he allowed was an intentional escape to set up a late takedown that secured the bonus points. His bounty included four takedowns and a two-point near fall.
Senior
James Reilley pitched a shutout in a solid 3-0 decision at 149 pounds. Reilley used a second-period reversal to gain the lead and did not allow an escape in the third period, resulting in a bonus point for riding time.
Junior
Simon Rice also used a reversal for his victory at 141 pounds. Rice earned a 3-1 decision, yielding his only point to stalling in the final seconds of the match.
Sophomore
Kenny Stank won a 6-2 decision at 157 pounds, allowing only a late reversal near the horn.
Freshman
Colten Keck made his home debut and held his own against Seton Hill senior All-American Kenny Trumbetta, dropping a 2-0 decision. Keck yielded an escape in the second period but could not earn one of his own in the third period, allowing an extra point for riding time.
Fellow freshman
Dylan Treaster made his Raider debut and nearly attained a victory before ultimately dropping a 5-3 overtime decision. Seton Hill's Randall Wagner, was awarded a point in the final 30 seconds of regulation due to the second stalling violation being issued against Treaster. In overtime, Treaster nearly completed a takedown but could not finish the move, and Wagner capitalized by turning the shot into a takedown of his own for the sudden victory at 174 pounds.
Shippensburg returns to action Sunday with competition at the 'Shorty' Hitchcock Memorial Classic from Millersville University. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. from Pucillo Gymnasium.
