LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team got on the field Wednesday afternoon for the first time in 11 days with a nine-inning contest against Division I Bucknell, the reigning champions of the Patriot League. SU dropped a 7-3 decision to the Bison from Depew Field.
Shippensburg (14-18) managed just two hits through the first six innings but stayed within fighting distance due to solid relief pitching. Sophomore
Josh Scott worked the fourth and the fifth, striking out two, while freshman
Shawn Patterson worked a perfect sixth and junior
Ted Williams worked a scoreless seventh.
The Raiders plated three runs in the seventh and got the tying run into the on-deck circle during its rally. Junior
Ben Miller led off with a walk before freshman
Pat Kregeloh launched a two-run homer over the right-center field wall that got SU on the scoreboard. It was the first career round-tripper for Kregeloh.
Junior
Tyler Uphouse and sophomore
Steve Sulcoski followed with walks, ending the day for Bison reliever Taylor Runge after four batters faced. Senior
Jesse Smith swapped spots on the basepaths with Sulcoski after a fielder's choice – moving Uphouse to third.
Smith stole second in the next at-bat and then moved to third after a balk plated Uphouse. Bucknell freshman Dan Weigel ended the Raider rally with back-to-back strikeouts of senior
Kris Kullman and sophomore
David McKolosky.
Senior
AJ Czap hit from the leadoff spot for the first time in 2011 - his seventh different position in the batting order this season - and had one of the four Raider hits in the contest. Czap is hitting .300 over his last 10 games. Miller and Uphouse were both 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.
Bucknell (13-20) plated five runs in the first inning against sophomore
Cam Richardson and rode that momentum to victory. Richardson settled down after a tough opening frame – throwing three innings overall with two strikeouts.
On Friday, Shippensburg will host a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader against Millersville. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Fairchild Field. The Raiders will be hosting Military Appreciation Day and invite anyone who is currently serving or has previously served in the military to come out and enjoy the games. Donations will be collected with all proceeds going toward the Wounded Warrior Project.
