Pitching Struggles For Red Raider Baseball In Doubleheader Loss to Barton, 12-6 and 11-5

BARTON, N.C. –
The Shippensburg University baseball team scored 11 runs in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon from Nixon Field but the Red Raiders could not come away with a victory after yielding 23 runs in a pair of losses to Barton, 12-6 and 11-5.

Shippensburg (0-8) had some solid production at the plate that kept the team in contention during each game. In the opener, senior first baseman Kevin Scholly slugged a three-run home run during a six-run fourth inning that brought the Red Raiders within two runs at the time.

Sophomore third baseman Ben Miller had an RBI-single and two walks while freshman designated hitter Steve Sulcoski also contributed an RBI-single.

In the second game, Miller played second base and shortstop and reached base each plate appearance. He went 2-for-2 with an RBI, walk and two runs. Scholly added his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left-center field, in the sixth inning.

Barton (6-3) got offensive contributions from several players. Aaron Watkins, totaled five hits in six at-bats over the two games along with four RBIs while Chris Rawlings added four hits, five runs and four RBIs.

Sophomore Ryan Rehman took the loss for Game 1 while sophomore Jimmy Miller suffered his first setback of the season in Game 2.

The Red Raiders return to action next weekend and will look to rebound at No. 16 Mount Olive, the 2008 national champions. Shippensburg will play a doubleheader at noon on Saturday and a single game against the Trojans at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
