JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University baseball team returned to the site of its 2008 North Atlantic Regional Championship on Wednesday afternoon and plated 11 runs in the second game of a doubleheader to split a two-game set with Pittsburgh-Johnstown at Point Stadium. The Raiders lost the opener 9-3 but won the nightcap 11-6.
Shippensburg (18-23) scored runs in six of the seven innings during Game 2 and received a bevy of solid offensive performances. Junior
Rick Shumway went 3-for-3 in the nightcap with an RBI, walk and four runs. Senior
Tyler Redick added a double, triple, RBI and a run.
The Raiders plated three runs in the first inning of Game 2 off a two-run single from sophomore
Nole Saylor and an RBI-single from freshman
Zach Seaman. An RBI-single in the top of the second from senior
Kasey Kuhns gave Shippensburg its fourth run of the game, but UPJ had tied the score at 4-4 through two innings.
Seaman and Shumway delivered RBI-singles in the top of the third to give Shippensburg a 6-4 lead that it would not relinquish. Sophomore
Steve McCardell scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and drove home a run in the fifth with a single to extend the lead before three more runs in the seventh sealed the win.
In the opening game, Kuhns and junior first baseman
Kevin Scholly each delivered RBIs as six different Raiders recorded hits. Scholly and senior catcher
Sean Killian smacked doubles in the game while Killian, Shumway and freshman
Ben Miller came across the plate.
Freshman
Nick Umberger took the loss in Game 1, allowing five runs and eight hits through 1.2 innings. Freshmen
Ted Williams and
Jimmy Miller joined junior
Kyle Chronister in relief over the final 4.1 innings. The Mountain Cats slugged seven extra-base hits in the Game 1 victory.
Senior
Jason Kelly earned the Game 2 victory in relief of junior
Phil Harnick. Kelly allowed just one run on four hits over 3.1 innings, while senior
Andrew Burke pitched the seventh to finish the game. Harnick started but allowed three hits, four runs and five walks in 2.2 innings.
Shippensburg returns to action this weekend with a crucial PSAC Eastern Division series with Mansfield. The Raiders are scheduled to host the Mountaineers on Friday at 1 p.m. from Fairchild Field.
