SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University baseball team concluded its 2009 regular season on Friday afternoon from Fairchild Field against No. 7 West Chester and honored its eight seniors in ceremonies held between games. The visiting Golden Rams won the games by scores of 3-0 and 7-0.
Shippensburg (23-30, 12-12 PSAC East) had already clinched the No. 3 seed from the Eastern Division for the 2009 PSAC Tournament entering the contests and received an excellent start in the opener from one of its seniors,
Tim Freshour. In his fifth complete game of the season, Freshour scattered five hits and allowed three runs (two earned) along with just one extra-bast hit.
West Chester (37-10, 21-3 PSAC East) rode its starting pitchers to victory, receiving a three-hitter in the opener from David Slusser and a four-hitter through six innings of game two by Bret Moyer. The Golden Rams capitalized in game two after freshman
Ryan Rehman allowed four runs in two innings and had to leave in the third inning after taking a comebacker off his leg.
Offensively, senior
Tyler Redick had two of Shippensburg's four hits in the second game, while freshmen
Cody Kulp and
Ben Miller had a hit in each game.
In addition to Freshour and Redick, the doubleheader marked the final home games in the careers of
Andrew Burke,
Phil Harnick,
Jason Kelly,
Sean Killian,
Kasey Kuhns and
Kyle Rhoades.
This group of eight men has been a part of 121 victories over the past four seasons but more importantly this group can claim that they have been PSAC Western Division Champions, PSAC Tournament Champions, North Atlantic Region Champions and a part of the first squad in school history to win a game at the Division II College World Series.
Burke has been a consistent starter over his career for Shippensburg, totaling 15 wins and 143 strikeouts in 181 career innings. He has set career highs this season in wins (6), innings (67), starts (12) and strikeouts (61) and has made 27 starts over the course of his career.
Freshour threw SU's record holder for complete games and innings in a season and threw the team's first no-hitter in 13 years. He is 17-10 with a 2.83 career ERA through 30 career starts, striking out 133 batters through 190 innings. He earned three regional awards as a junior.
Harnick will be completing his third year of action with Shippensburg this season and has been a team captain. He has pitched 46 innings for the Raiders in his career and has recorded 30 strikeouts, making six starts and recording one victory during his tenure.
Kelly stepped up with a 7-3 record on the mound as a junior and has made 16 career starts. He has nine career victories and 88 strikeouts through 136 innings and has made 56 career appearances. In addition to his nine pitching wins, Kelly has also played outfield.
Killian has been a journeyman behind the plate for the Raiders, appearing in 145 games over four years. He has totaled 94 hits and 68 runs over his career while slugging 11 home runs and 69 RBIs. Along with 142 total bases, Killian has a .360 career OBP.
Kuhns, the team leader in RBIs last season, is a career .302 hitter with 10 home runs and 99 RBIs through 153 career games. He has compiled 203 total bases and recorded 12 steals to go along with 82 career runs and a slugging percentage that sits above .400.
Redick, a three-time All-PSAC Second Team selection, has compiled 276 career hits and is within striking distance of the SU record. He has started in 185 consecutive games, compiled 120 RBIs, batted .349, stolen 45 bases, scored 172 runs and totaled 357 total bases overall.
Rhoades, an All-PSAC West and region first-teamer last year, has totaled 165 hits and is a career .275 hitter. He has also scored 109 runs and been a steady defender through 180 career games. Rhoades has recorded 14 steals along with 63 walks and 194 total bases.
Shippensburg will now await the seeding of the 2009 PSAC Tournament that will be held from May 4-7 in Lancaster at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
