WILSON, N.C. - Junior infielders Kevin Scholly and Rick Shumway each smacked solo home runs for the Shippensburg University baseball team on Sunday afternoon but the Raiders could not complete a ninth-inning comeback against Barton, dropping a 6-5 decision from Nixon Field.

Shippensburg (3-7) took the lead in the top of the first inning with an unearned run as senior second baseman Kyle Rhoades led off the frame with a walk and eventually came around to score with two outs. The host Bulldogs rallied with two runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

The Raiders did not get a hit off Barton starter Wesley Francis until the fifth inning, when Shumway led off with a solo home run to left field. Scholly hit his round tripper over the right field fence just one inning later to bring Shippensburg within two runs of the Bulldogs.

The ninth-inning rally began with a leadoff single from Rhoades and sophomore shortstop Steve McCardell reaching on a fielding error. After senior Tyler Redick lined out to center field, Barton countered with relief pitcher Jimmy Metzinger, who promptly uncorked a wild pitch and walked senior catcher Sean Killian to load the bases.

Freshman right fielder Cody Kulp exercised his plate discipline and drew a bases-loaded walk to bring the Raiders within one run, 6-5. Barton countered with another relief pitcher, Nick Nigito, who induced a double-play grounder off the bat of freshman designated hitter Zach Seaman that ended the game.

Sophomore Kody Kibler did a fine job in relief of freshman starter Jimmy Miller, scattering two hits and allowing just an unearned run in 4.1 innings of work. Miller allowed five runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings.

Rhoades finished the game 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Redick finished the day 0-for-4 at the plate with a walk, ending his 22-game hitting streak that leaves him tied for the school record with Chad Stecker '05.

The Raiders begin a southern trip next weekend with a three-game series at the University of South Carolina-Aiken that begins on Friday with a single game at 6 p.m.
