AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Shippensburg men's baseball team concluded a four-game weekend series with the Jaguars of Augusta State University on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader from Lake Olmstead Stadium, winning the opener 8-5 before dropping the nightcap, 4-3.
Shippensburg (2-5) entered the final inning of the opening game tied 4-4 with the Jaguars but recorded five consecutive hits and plated four runs for the victory. Senior
Tyler Redick came in from center field after two walks in the bottom of the inning to record his second save of the season while allowing just one inherited runner to score.
The seventh-inning rally began with singles from senior catcher
Sean Killian and left fielder
Kasey Kuhns. Junior first baseman
Kevin Scholly followed with an RBI-double to left, and senior second baseman
Kyle Rhoades plated Kuhns and Scholly with a single to right field. Junior third baseman
Rick Shumway singled home Rhoades to cap the scoring.
Senior pitcher
Andrew Burke got the start in the opener and earned a no-decision, allowing four runs and five hits while striking out five batters in five innings of work. Freshman
Ryan Rehman earned his first collegiate victory with a scoreless sixth inning before leaving after allowing the two walks to start the bottom of the seventh inning.
Scholly finished the opener 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, while Redick had an RBI-single and a walk in four plate appearances. Rhoades was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs, as seven of the nine Raider starters had at least one hit.
The nightcap featured a near comeback for the Raiders, who were down 4-2 entering the top of the seventh inning. Once again with two outs, and no runners on base, Shippensburg began a rally. Redick was hit by a pitch, and Shumway singled to put two runners on base. An RBI-single from freshman right fielder
Cody Kulp plated Redick and moved the tying run to second base.
Augusta State's senior starter Ben Dukes was then removed in place of reliever Blake Pockrandt, who struck out Kuhns to end the game. Dukes earned the victory by allowing just three earned runs in 6.2 innings and Pockrandt recorded his first save while sophomore starting pitcher
Kody Kibler suffered his first loss of the season for Shippensburg.
Six different Raiders had singles in the nightcap, as Kulp finished with two RBIs. Freshman designated hitter
Jimmy Miller had an RBI-groundout in the second inning. Redick and Rhoades each finished the doubleheader with three hits.
Shippensburg returns to action next weekend with a three-game series from Barton College in North Carolina. The Raiders will have a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at noon and a single game on Sunday that will start at 1 p.m.
