AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Shippensburg men's baseball team began a four-game series with the Jaguars of Augusta State University on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader from Lake Olmstead Stadium but dropped both games of its twinbill by scores of 8-6 and 6-3.

Shippensburg (1-4) held leads in both of its games on Saturday but once again struggled on the mound, allowing 14 runs to its second-consecutive well-seasoned opponent. Defensively, the Raiders committed eight errors in the doubleheader as the fielders look to get adjusted during the start of the season.

Senior Tyler Redick, who finished the doubleheader with two hits and two RBIs, drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the second inning of Game 1 that brought Shippensburg within two runs, but junior Rick Shumway flied out to right field to end the inning.

The Raiders took a 4-3 lead after a three-run top of the fourth inning, as Redick, Shumway and freshman right fielder Cody Kulp delivered consecutive RBI-singles with two outs in the inning off Jaguar senior starter Chris Tyler.

Augusta State (6-5), playing in its 10th and 11th games of the season, countered with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning from Jaguar junior Tony Baker off Raider senior Tim Freshour, who yielded seven earned runs and 10 hits in just five innings of work.

The scoring continued in the top of the fifth inning as the Raiders once again tied the game with two runs. With senior catcher Sean Killian on second base and senior left fielder Kasey Kuhns at first, sophomore designated hitter Steve McCardell smacked a single to right-center field that scored Killian. Senior second baseman Kyle Rhoades grounded out to plate Kuhns.

In Game 2, the Raiders struggled defensively by committing six errors. Senior Jason Kelly started for Shippensburg and allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. The Raiders were up 3-2 heading into the bottom of the third inning but fell behind after allowing runs over the next four innings.

McCardell was the offensive star of Game 2 with a two-run home run and finished the afternoon with three hits and three RBIs. Rhoades also had three hits in the doubleheader along with two RBIs, while Augusta State got six hits, five runs and four RBIs from junior right fielder Shannon Wilkerson.

Shippensburg returns to action with another doubleheader against Augusta State that begins at noon on Sunday from Lake Olmstead Stadium.
