RECAP: Tennis picks up 7-0 road victory at Penn State Altoona

Markovich and De Meyer won the top two singles flights and both contributed to doubles victories

The Shippensburg University women's tennis team ventured up to Blair County on Friday night and came away with a 7-0 victory against Penn State Altoona in a match that was held indoors due to weather conditions.

Shippensburg (5-7) got started with three impressive doubles wins that gave the Raiders the early 1-0 advantage. Corinne Markovich and Jade Miller won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles; Ava Kalist and Yasmin De Meyer won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Taylor Maguire and Janelle Kingsboro won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Miller put SU up 2-0 with a quick win at No. 3 singles, winning one and zero over Sienna Fell. Markovich was the next Raider victory, claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.

The win became official when De Meyer won 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 2 singles to give Shippensburg a 4-0 lead.

Due to the indoor match being limited to three courts, the No. 4 through No. 6 singles matches then rotated in when surfaces became available. Brinley Orris posted a quick victory at No. 5 singles – like Miller, she also posted a one and zero win over her opponent.

Rachel Gallagher went into extra points in a tiebreaker but came out on the right end of a long match at No. 4 singles. Gallagher won 6-2, 4-6, 11-9.

Kalist wrapped up the night for Shippensburg with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

Shippensburg's home match versus Lock Haven scheduled for Saturday has been postponed and re-scheduled for Thursday, April 9.

SU's next time out will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bloomsburg for what becomes the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener.
