SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team found the back of the net six times, including five goals in the second half, to score a rousing victory in its season opener Saturday afternoon against Chestnut Hill at David See Field, 6-1.
Three different Shippensburg (1-0) forwards registered career nights against the Griffins (0-2). Sophomore
Kyle Ganley scored three second half goals to notch his first career hat trick. Senior forward
Ethan Paulukow tallied the Raiders' lone first half goal and handed out two second-half assists, while sophomore forward
Anthony Weekley finished with a goal and an assist.
The two teams felt each other out for much of the first half until Paulukow found a breakthrough with 15 seconds remaining before intermission.
Weekley delivered a cross from the left wing that the found the SU target man in the box, who gathered a short-hop with a sublime first touch and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner for the opener.
The Griffins found an equalizer off the boot of Terrance Doe eight minutes into the second half, only for the Raiders to break the deadlock just 14 seconds later courtesy of a Weekley header, 2-1.
The goals came in abundance from that point forward. Sophomore defender
Nate Herb scored a set piece goal off a
John Trigg corner kick in the 67th minute.
Ganley later scored back-to-back tallies, both the result of square balls across the box from Paulukow to make it 5-1, and Ganley completed the hat trick with a low well-placed shot from the edge of the ball in the 81st minute.
Ganley's hat trick marked the first by an SU player since Seth Crabbe in the 2022 season opener (a 3-0 win over Slippery Rock), and the six goals scored by the Raiders were the team's most in a single game since Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018 – a 7-0 win over Shepherd.
Ryan Krumenacker was tested by the Chestnut Hill attack, particularly in the opening half. The Ship netminder produced seven total saves.
Next up, the Raiders return to David See Field Wednesday when they host Jefferson at 6 p.m.
