SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team opened the 2025 season by scoring its most goals in a match in six years as it posted a decisive 6-2 victory over Goldey-Beacom on Thursday in non-conference action at David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-0-0) tallied three goals in each half to accrue its most tallies in a match since the 2019 season finale (a 7-0 victory over Mansfield). The Raiders scored on more than half of their shots on goal and finished with a 10-4 advantage in the category. SU also earned eight corner kicks to Goldey Beacom (0-1-0)'s one.
Ashley Hughes and
Jordan Lytwyn each scored twice, while
Cailin Spelman and
Lannah Werynski added a goal apiece. The four women had combined for just three career goals entering Thursday (two by Werynski, one by Hughes).
In the ninth minute, SU took the lead and never relinquished it. Spelman headed home the ricochet of a
Ryleigh Cook corner kick to open the scoring. Spelman's header hit the top of the crossbar and dropped down into the goal.
Shippensburg scored another goal off a set piece in the 28th minute to go up 2-0. Hughes administered a clinical header off a
Sammy Lerario free kick to double the Raider advantage.
With 90 seconds left in the half, Lytwyn delivered a beautiful left-footed strike into the lower right corner to give SU a 3-0 lead. Lytwyn's first career goal was the culmination of a run that began near midfield, as she received a ball from
Danielle Leber, sprinted up the right wing and gained separation from a defender to sneak the shot past GBC goalkeeper Jennifer Klumpp.
Hughes's second goal came just five minutes into the second half and the was result of a defensive miscue by the Lightning. Two defenders collided in the box, allowing an unmarked Hughes to kick the ball into the open frame.
Werynski's tally in the 70th minute came off a rebound of her initial blocked shot. Her strike was sent into the lower left corner to make the score 5-1.
Lytwyn's second goal, SU's sixth and final tally, was the result of an exemplary effort by
Taylor Steininger. Near the top of the box, Steininger juked a defender and fired a left-footed shot that rang off the middle of the crossbar. The rebound went right to Lytwyn, who knocked it into the open goal with two minutes remaining.
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Kirstin Brown got the win for the Raiders, making two saves in 69 minutes of action. Sophomore
Hannah Cline made her third collegiate appearance in goal and worked the final 21 minutes.
Eight different players finished with at least one point for Shippensburg. The Raiders, playing the first of two matches in three days, were able to utilize 12 players off the bench in Thursday's match.
The Lightning got a pair of strikes from Jessica Jensen, a Whittier College transfer who was the 2024 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Newcomer of the Year.
Shippensburg returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts West Chester for its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener at David See Field.
