NEWVILLE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's cross country team used a perfect 1-2-3 finish Saturday to win the Dickinson "Short" Invitational with a perfect team score on a muggy afternoon at Big Spring High School.
After running in lockstep with Williamson's Chase Ely for the majority of the race, the Raider triumvirate of
Tommy Crum Jr.,
Garrett Quinan and
Ryan Wolfe pulled away at the finish line.
Crum's victorious 4K time of 11:46.6 was just nine-tenths of a second ahead of Quinan. Wolfe used a late surge to take third in 11:51.3 – just four-tenths of a second ahead of Ely.
Shippensburg had four runners finish consecutively in 11th through 14th place.
Ben Devine led that grouping with a time of 12:25.5, with
Brennan Wellock nine-tenths of a second behind him.
Brayden Boyd and
Daniel Naylor rounded out the Raider quartet.
Kyle Baker was two spots behind Naylor, while
Owen Shrader and
Jackson Gutekunst achieved Top 20 finishes. All 12 Raiders who competed Saturday cracked the Top 25, with
Ben Hummel (21st place) and
Davey Johnson (25th place) completing the SU lineup.
Due to host Dickinson conducting four races on the day of various lengths (men's and women's 4Ks for a "Short" Invitational and a men's 8K and a women's 6K for a "Long" Invitational), and several schools having competitors split between the two distances, only the Top 3 runners per team counted toward team scores.
Shippensburg is right back in action Friday when it heads north to compete in the prestigious Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh.
