SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team battled hard but fell to No. 22-ranked Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) clash Wednesday evening at David See Field, 1-0.
Shippensburg (1-1-2, 0-1-2 PSAC East) outshot Bloomsburg (5-0, 2-0) 13-to-11 in the contest, including a five-to-four edge in shots on goal, and a maintained a six-to-zero advantage in corner kicks.
The difference between the two sides came from a deadball situation in the 30th minute. Bloom's Daryn Savage smashed an inch-perfect ball from nearly 50-yards out, successfully finding substitute Haley Bull's left foot while making a near post run resulting in the game's only goal.
Ashley Hughes' ability to take on defenders led to several chances as SU searched for a second half equalizer. Hughes finished with a team-best two shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Kirstin Brown was exceptional in directing the SU backline and posted three saves.
All-PSAC keeper Samantha Merklin made five total stops for the Huskies.
The Raiders return to action when they host Millersville Saturday at 2 p.m.
