SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University Athletics has hired
Hannah Marsteller '22/'23M as its full-time assistant softball coach.
Marsteller has been elevated to the role after the completion of a national search. She had been serving as a student assistant coach with the team during the 2024 preseason and the entirety of the 2024-25 season.
"I am incredibly excited to begin my role as the assistant softball coach for Shippensburg University," Marsteller said. "Returning back to my alma mater is a unique and an incredibly meaningful opportunity for me. This program has shaped me as both an athlete and an individual, and to be given the opportunity to give back in this new role feels like such a blessing."
Marsteller was a standout athlete who helped the Raiders win the 2023 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship and qualify for the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Atlantic Region Championships.
"I am incredibly excited to officially welcome Hannah to our coaching staff," head coach
Alison Van Scyoc said. "It was an honor coaching her through her illustrious career, and it has been equally exciting to watch her grow in her coaching ability. I have no doubt that she will have a tremendous impact on our program and she will continue to elevate our softball culture."
One of just two players in school history to earn three consecutive National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-America honors and finish as a three-time PSAC Athlete of the Year, Marsteller graduated with SU career records in the following categories: hits (282), runs (195), doubles (62), home runs (62), slugging % (.857), on-base % (.516), RBIs (249) and walks (97).
"I hope to bring a wealth of experience to this program," Marsteller added. "Having been a student-athlete in this program, as well as playing professional softball in Italy, I feel as though I can bring a relatable experience to the student-athletes. I offer advanced technical skills, strategic knowledge and firsthand insight into balancing academics and athletics."
Marsteller earned multiple major awards during her collegiate career. She was a two-time Ron Lenz Division II National Player of the Year as well as a Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Atlantic Region Player of the Year. After assisting the team during the 2023-24 preseason, Marsteller spent the spring of 2024 playing professionally for Collecchio, one of nine teams in the top division of Italian softball.
"My primary goal is to help our team achieve competitive success while maintaining a culture of integrity, hard work, and mutual respect," Marsteller stated. "I want our players to leave this program not only as better athletes but also as more confident and capable individuals."
Marsteller, a two-time College Sports Communicators (CSC) First Team Academic All American ® and the 2021-22 Pete Nevins PSAC Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year, is set to earn her third degree from Shippensburg this spring (an MBA) after previously graduating cum laude in May 2022 with her bachelor's degree in biology (pre-veterinary concentration) and her master's degree in biology in May 2023.
"What I value most in this program is its culture," Marsteller said. "I want to continue to foster a positive, growth-oriented environment for our student-athletes, where they can develop both on and off the field. Although my focus will be primarily on enhancing softball skills, I also want to promote strong team dynamics and ensure they are excelling in the classroom."
