Alison Van Scyoc is in her ninth season as the head coach of the Shippensburg University softball team in 2025.
Van Scyoc has directed the Raiders to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and six Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament appearances in the last seven seasons.
She has compiled an overall record of 210-147. The Raiders have won six PSAC Tournament games during her tenure.
Among the players Van Scyoc has instructed are two-time Ron Lenz National Player of the Year, Hannah Marsteller. Marsteller earned back-to-back All-PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Year, First Team honoree and NFCA All-America First Team. She also instructed two-time All-PSAC honorees Courtney Coy, the 2018 PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Year, and Kayla Bonawitz. Coy, Bonawitz and Tara Bicko have earned NFCA All-Region honors during Van Scyoc’s tenure, and the Raiders have totaled 15 All-PSAC honorees under her watch.
The 2022 campaign featured several Raiders setting milestone records including Marsteller setting a new school record for career RBIs and career home runs, and setting the longest PSAC hitting streak. Marsteller is the first Raider to repeat as the PSAC East Athlete of the Year. Morgan DeFeo tied two NCAA single-game records, becoming the 11th player to have six hits in a single game, and the 12th player to score six runs in a game. Katelyn Minney became the first Raider since 2019 to be named PSAC East Freshman of the Year.
The 2019 campaign featured the Raiders ranking among the Top 5 teams in the PSAC in batting average (.307), runs scored (249) and fielding percentage (.965). The 2018 squad struck out just 97 times in 1,129 at-bats (one per 11.6 at-bats).
In Van Scyoc’s debut season, the Raiders won 29 games. SU finished fourth at the PSAC Championships, posting a 3-2 record, and ended up just shy of the NCAA Tournament at No. 9 in the final Atlantic Regional rankings. SU finished third in the PSAC Eastern Division with an 8-8 record, only behind NCAA Tournament qualifiers West Chester and Kutztown.
Van Scyoc was named the Shippensburg University softball head coach on Sept. 21, 2016 after spending four seasons as an assistant coach with the Raiders, providing assistance in all areas of instruction and game preparation while also playing an integral role with the team's strength and conditioning efforts. The 2020 season is her eighth overall on the Raider coaching staff.
She originally joined the SU staff for the 2013 season after completing her playing career as a four-year varsity starter with the University of Virginia. She was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-Academic Team selection and served as a team captain in her final two seasons with the Cavaliers.
With the Cavaliers, Van Scyoc played in 199 career games, making 194 starts. She scored 92 runs, stole 60 bases and collected 28 RBIs during her tenure. As a senior, she started all 55 games for the Cavaliers and hit .276, scored 32 runs, stole 19 bases and did not commit an error.
Van Scyoc is a native of Shippensburg and earned four varsity letters playing for the Greyhounds of Shippensburg Area Senior High school, where she earned four All Mid-Penn Conference honors playing shortstop or catcher.
Alison is married to her wife Kristina (Grussenmeyer) '11, a former track & field athlete at Shippensburg. They are the parents of three children: Lennox, Landry, and Julia.
