SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior Sara Vosburg scored a golden goal 87 seconds into overtime Saturday as the Shippensburg University lacrosse team outlasted No. 14 Kutztown, 11-10, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division showdown on "Rise For Wise" Day at warm and windy Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (8-7, 3-7 PSAC East), which wore pink t-shirts during pre-game warmups in honor of the late Julia Wise, recorded its first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since Feb. 26, 2020 (a 10-9 victory over No. 21 Seton Hill), and got its eighth win overall – marking its most in a single season in 11 years (2014).

Kutztown (9-7, 6-5) scored a goal just 36 seconds in, but the Raiders countered with a four-goal outburst and established momentum by holding the Golden Bears scoreless for the next 13 minutes.

SU led 4-2 after the first quarter and 7-4 at halftime.

KU scored four times in the third quarter to get within one and eventually tied the game at 10-10 with 4:27 to go. That was all the scoring in regulation, however, as senior goalkeeper Kayla Vosburg made two of her 12 saves in the final 2:30 before overtime.

The Golden Bears won the opening draw of overtime but a shot by All-American Sam Graf was stopped by Kayla Vosburg. As the Raiders were completing the subsequent clear and advancing up field, a green card was issued on a KU defender.

Twenty-six seconds later, Vosburg deposited a feed from junior Ali Pioli into the back of the net to end the game in SU's favor.

Sara Vosburg led the Raiders with four goals, recording her eighth hat trick of the season. She added two caused turnovers, a groundball and a draw control, and is now solely in fifth place in school history for career points (196; 146 goals, 50 assists).

Her 71 points in 2025 are a career high and now the fourth-most in SU single-season history.

Pioli finished with two goals, two assists and a team-high four groundballs. Her two groundballs in the first quarter allowed her to become the 16th player in school history to record 100 career groundballs.

SU finished with a 14-11 advantage in draw controls; Pioli and junior Grace DeMarzio each finished with a game-high six and were frequent beneficiaries of the work done in the center circle by sophomore Brynn Hauck.

Freshman Maddie Phommachanh scored three goals to achieve her fifth hat trick of the season, while senior Jamie Carvin and junior Shannon Wood each added a tally. Wood and sophomore Olivia Glinski had an assist.

Seven different Raiders had at least one caused turnover. Senior Annie Rathgeb recorded two.

Seven different Raiders also recorded multiple groundballs, with Hauck, DeMarzio and senior Francesca Picone all totaling three.

Included in Kayla Vosburg's defensive efforts were a pair of stops on free-position shots; KU did not score a free-position goal in the contest. Kayla Vosburg has now made 46 saves over her last three games.

Graf, the PSAC's No. 3 goal scorer (59 entering Saturday), was held without a goal for the first time since the 2023 PSAC Semifinals, a span of 37 games. She did manage seven caused turnovers, however, along with two assists.

Lailah ElBouazzaoui paced the visitors with four goals; she led all players with nine shots on goal and 16 total shots. Maddie Wagner added a hat trick while Lauren Lamorte led all players with a career-high five assists.

Last year, Kutztown was also Shippensburg's opponent on "Rise For Wise" Day. The Golden Bears came away from that game with an 18-4 victory.

Saturday's win ended SU's five-game losing streak to Kutztown. IIt also happened to be the birthday for the Vosburg twins.

Shippensburg is back in action at 3 p.m. Wednesday at nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg.

RISE FOR WISE: SU Lacrosse holds a "Rise for Wise" game annually in honor of the late Julia Wise, a captain on the lacrosse team who graduated from Shippensburg University in 2017. After college, Julia battled metastatic Stage 4 breast cancer for four years. The team collects and encourages donations toward METAvivor (metavivor.org), a national organization for metastatic breast cancer research, support and awareness.
